CARES Benefits Explained
The COVID-19 pandemic is having a huge impact on all of our daily lives. Hopefully, this will soon pass, but in the meantime, there are resources available to help employees and businesses. I am sharing this information with all of you in the hope that it will help.
The Iowa Secretary of State's Office does not oversee or administer these programs. We are just sharing information.
Iowa Workforce Development has outlined the benefits of Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act of 2020, which provides unemployment benefits for the self-employed, independent contractors, nonprofit employees, gig economy workers, those who have exhausted other unemployment insurance benefits, and those who may not have sufficient work history to qualify for a regular state claim.

In our continued effort to make sure important information and resources are accessible to all Iowans, we are proud to announce our new helpline. Available in six different languages, staff and volunteers will be ready to help refugee and imirgrant families with:
- Questions related to COVID-19
- Setting up necessary medical appointments
- Delivery of food and essential items
- Applications for benefits like unemployment, WIC, food assistance
- Questions related to housing and utility support
- Victim Services
