House to Vote on COVID-19 Relief, Including WIC Investments

This week the House Budget Committee will begin the process for the full House of Representatives to consider the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, which comprehensively addresses the public health and economic consequences of COVID-19. The Budget Committee’s consideration will allow the full House to vote on the legislative package later this week.

Vilsack Confirmed by Senate to Head USDA
Today the Senate confirmed Tom Vilsack as Agriculture Secretary. Vilsack had previously filled that role under President Obama, is expected to earn bipartisan support, and was endorsed by the National WIC Association.
Gov Newsom Signs COVID-19 Relief Package

Today Gov. Newsom signed a covid relief package that will give millions of low-income and undocumented Californians a $600 relief payment, and aid small businesses. The governor and lawmakers remain in a deadlock over school reopening.  
Paid Sick Days for CA

A proposal for increased paid sick leave lead by the California Work and Family Coalition and supported by CWA now has bill language in the Senate (SB 95) and the Assembly (AB 84)!

Depression, Anxiety 'Extremely High' Among New Mothers Since Start of Social Distancing
Prevalence rates of clinically relevant depression and anxiety have been “extremely high” among postnatal women during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to study results published in Journal of Psychiatric Research.

Telehealth used in 30.1% of visits during COVID-19 pandemic

Telehealth visits accounted for approximately 30% of total outpatient visits early in the COVID-19 pandemic, with uptake varying among specialties and by patient characteristics, according to research published in Health Affairs.


U.S. Surpasses 500,000 COVID-19 Deaths
More than 500,000 people have died from COVID-19 in the U.S. The disease has killed at least 100,000 people in the past five weeks and was the leading cause of death in the country in January, ahead of heart disease, cancer and other ailments, according to an analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation.
