Voice Care Strategies for Speakers (& Singers)
by Carole Brewer
No matter the time of year, being conscious of overall health includes care of our God-given mouthpiece, our voice. With speaking engagements, podcasts, and interviews ahead, make sure to apply these strategies for keeping a healthy voice on your performance day.

THE HEALTHY DO’S
  • A vitamin B- Complex tablet is a healthy alternative to caffeine.
  • Eat a few hours before you speak so your food will be digested.
  • Bring with you clear lozenges and/or throat spray
  • Place a cup of hot tea by your podium and drop in a clear cough drop. Sip as needed for soothing relief.
  • To soothe and help heal a sore throat, gargle with warm salty water.
  • If you must perform with a raspy sore throat, use a numbing throat spray or lozenge, speak at a reduced volume, and turn up your mic! Refrain from talking for the next several days to heal.

WHAT TO AVOID
  • Extensive talking just before your presentation.
  • Lemon juice, antiseptic mouthwash, ground pepper, tangy salad dressings, and spicy foods increase the risk of a dry, irritated throat.
  • Milk products can cause congestion.
  • Icy beverages tighten throat muscles. Think warm up, not freeze up.
  • Carbonated beverages and coffee can unsettle the stomach and affect the throat.
  • Avoid a regular dose of antihistamines and/or decongestants. For sinus congestion, take a less-drying, small amount of children’s antihistamine syrup to get through your session.
  • Avoid air conditioning or cold air that blows directly toward your face.
  • For events where food is served, eat lightly and save your voice by talking less. Keep in mind that it’s harder to speak and sing well on a full stomach and with a tired voice.

Together, let’s thank and praise God for the incredible ability to vocally communicate. Our prayer is that we use our voices well, ready for each new God-given opportunity to share His Good News.

“Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel” Ephesians 6:19

Faith Talk
Mustard Seed Faith
by Katherine Legg
I’m a Jeremiah 33:3 girl! Are you? This scripture says, "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know." Calling on God and trusting Him only requires a mustard seed faith!

The disciples were hungry for an increase in their faith and Jesus responded in Luke 17:5-6 saying that if you had faith like a mustard seed, you would be able to do impossible things.
In Mark 4:30-32, Jesus tells us to picture the Kingdom of God to be like a mustard seed that when planted, grows to become very large. With that in mind, I like to choose scriptures, put mustard seed in place of the word faith, and begin to picture what God wants me to do.

In CWIMA, my little faith has grown through the luncheons and conferences I attended. I learned about the possibilities available in media and have made meaningful friendships. By letting my roots go even deeper, more opportunities to grow my faith have come about. As a member of CWIMA, I’ve traveled to Europe, been the Mainstage Manager for the Global Media Summit, and have worked with Suellen Roberts as her Executive Assistant. My journey has always been by faith but has greatly expanded by what God saw in my little seed.

Today, my faith continues to grow as I serve with Marli Spieker, Global Director of Heart of Mercy Mission. This new charitable division of Christian Women in Media Association reaches, rescues, and restores suffering women globally.

My NOW faith is found in Hebrews 11:1: "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." Are you like the disciples and me, ready to increase your faith? Choose scriptures, put mustard seed in place of the word faith, and begin to picture what God wants to do through you!
