We would agree that this statement from Nelson Mandela is true, with the exception of the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. That is why we seek to use education to change the lives of those we serve whether that be traditional school, vocational training, leadership development or Bible studies. Getting an education is important.

We assist the vulnerable children in the Zimbabwe Our Kids Program to get an education by assisting with school fees and other school needs. Also, for the children in the Sri Lankan village of Anaivilunthan where the education system is lacking. It has been a blessing to see some of these children graduate from school and become successful. Even though the ministry has officially ended in Zambia, we are continuing to support the Nephews who began going to school. Our hope is that this will help them as they continue to help themselves and also encourage them to grow in their faith.

The Feminine Training Centers (FTC) in Haiti and the Village of Opportunity (VOO) in Burkina have been successful in giving vocational training to women. The women who receive training from these ministries are able to gain employment or start their own business helping them supply for the needs of themselves and their families. They also gain self-respect and dignity as they become successful in their endeavors. Some come back for additional training because they see the impact it has had on their lives. In May, 25 young ladies graduated from the VOO and 20 of the 22 who took the national exam passed. There is also a spiritual impact on these women’s lives as they hear the Gospel during chapels and when classes start with singing and prayer.

Biblical education is key as we seek to disciple those who participate in Church ministries in Haiti and Zimbabwe. Pastors and lay leaders in both these places crave the opportunity to learn spiritual truths and ways they can better minister in and through their churches. The times of training not only help them grow in their own faith but give them the tools to disciple others and evangelize in their communities. Statements like, “we love this training you provide because it is so relevant and practical” and “these leadership seminars have helped me grow in my leadership skills and I have seen some transformation in my church”.

The new Single Moms Raising Sons (SMRS) ministry Bible studies are an example of Biblical education. These Bible studies are helping educate single moms as they navigate life as a single parent. Learning who their Heavenly Father is so they can pass this knowledge on to their sons is key to changing lives. The young ladies at the VOO, alluded to above, attend chapel every morning to start their day. Those who have accepted Christ are given the opportunity to lead chapel so that they can learn how to share their faith once they go back to their communities.

It is a beautiful thing that no one can take away what is learned from those in Burkina Faso, Haiti, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, South Africa and everywhere we serve. They can hold on to the knowledge they gain to help themselves socially and economically and also as they grow as disciples sharing the Gospel with others.
