Last week, the Council of Western State Foresters (CWSF) and the Western Forestry Leadership Coalition (WFLC) welcomed two new staff members, Neil Simpson as Director of Policy and Leena Visnak as Competitive Grants Manager.

American Samoa Program Review | |
Sara Goodwin, CWSF/WFLC Director of Communications, recently participated in the American Samoa program review alongside the USDA Forest Service Region 5 staff. This program review presented an opportunity for WFLC to engage with the forestry team and learn more about the forestry programs in American Samoa.

Forest to Frame Tour Highlights Mass Timber and Good Neighbor Authority | |
In June 2023, the CWSF Forest Products Committee and the Oregon Department of Forestry hosted a Forest to Frame tour focused on the connection between sustainable economic development, Mass Timber construction, and Good Neighbor Authority.

CWSF Forest Health & Forest Stewardship/Landowner Assistance Committees
The CWSF membership voted unanimously to stand up a Forest Health Committee and a Forest Stewardship/Landowner Assistance Committee. The kick-off meeting for the Forest Health Committee will be Tuesday, August 8, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Mountain Time. The kick-off meeting for the Forest Stewardship/Landowner Assistance Committee will be Thursday, August 10, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Mountain Time.

WFLC Pacific Islands Forestry Committee |
The Pacific Islands Forestry Committee (PIFC) Executive Committee is currently planning for their annual meeting to be held in Waikoloa, Hawaiʻi, on Friday, December 1, and Saturday, December 2, immediately following the 2023 CWSF/WFLC Fall Meeting. This meeting includes the Pacific Island Foresters and USDA Forest Service partners.
Registration for the PIFC Executive Committee meeting will be sent to invited members by August 31, 2023.

The PIFC Technical Training Workshop will be held in Hilo, Hawaiʻi, December 4 - 8, 2023. This workshop is designed for Pacific Island forestry agency staff and invited partners to receive technical forestry training on a variety of topics, including monitoring, data management, outreach, invasive species, program management, and grants.
Registration for the PIFC Technical Training Workshop will be sent to Pacific Island members and invited partners by August 31, 2023.

Community Wildfire Defense Grant (CWDG) Program
Projects that are being funded from the fiscal year (FY) 2022 CWDG program can be found here. Applications from the Western Region for FY 2022 can be found in the portal.
The FY 2023 timeline for the second cycle of applications will be announced soon. Dates for the applicant webinars will be announced once finalized. For more information, visit the CWSF CWDG webpage or the USDA Forest Service CWDG webpage.

Landscape Scale Restoration (LSR) Competitive Grant Program
The FY 2024 LSR Competitive Grant process will open for applications on August 10, 2023, and close on November 17, 2023. For more information, visit the WFLC LSR webpage.

The FY 2023 WUI Grant Program is officially closed. The FY 2023 recommendation letter is publicly available to view on our website. For more information, visit the CWSF WUI webpage. The FY 2024 timeline is being determined and will be announced once finalized.

Reminder - 2023 NASF Awards |
The NASF Awards Committee is accepting nominations for the 2023 NASF Awards. These awards recognize individuals that exemplify outstanding qualities in their respective areas of expertise. Only nominations submitted on or before Friday, July 28, through this online form will be considered. Descriptions of the awards and guidelines for selection are included on the first page of the online form.
The 2023 NASF Award winners will be honored in person at the 2023 NASF Annual Meeting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
