Organizational Highlights

2022 CWSF/WFLC Spring Meeting

The Council of Western State Foresters (CWSF) and Western Forestry Leadership Coalition (WFLC) 2022 Spring Meeting took place May 17-19 at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS. Dialogue focused on implementation of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, fostering meaningful partnerships, and workforce development and retention. Participants also reviewed a near-final second edition report on the True Cost of Wildfire in the Western United States.


The next in-person gathering for CWSF and WFLC members will take place at the Fall Meeting on November 15-17 in Santa Fe, NM.

Forest Products Committee Request for Proposals

The CWSF Forest Products Committee requests proposals from qualified respondents to research, prepare, and present a written report and presentation format summary on wood wool cement products and wood fiber insulation. The submission deadline is June 30, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. MDT.

Good Neighbor Authority - New Mexico Spotlight

The WFLC Good Neighbor Authority (GNA) Information and Resources webpage was recently updated with a new spotlight on the Box Canyon Project, a GNA project in New Mexico between a county conservation district and the USDA Forest Service.

Policy Update

Federal and state agencies are continuing their efforts to coordinate the strategic implementation of the massive investments enacted within the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). To help navigate the numerous opportunities available for rural communities, the White House has published a BIL Rural Playbook. Applications are now being accepted for the America the Beautiful Challenge for voluntary conservation and restoration projects.

Member Transitions

Dr. Cynthia “Cindi” West will serve as Acting Deputy Chief of Research and Development for the USDA Forest Service, effective April 30.


Tracy Tophooven will serve as Interim Station Director for the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station and Interim Director of the Forest Products Laboratory, effective April 30.
