CYSD School Board Discusses Budget
Draft Preliminary Budget Included Below
Central York School District Board of School Directors is required by state law to approve a preliminary budget for 2017-2018 in December 2016. District Administration presented the attached Preliminary General Fund Budget for review and discussion during the December 5 Board Planning Meeting.
The attached document is the District's presentation shared publicly during the December 5 meeting. The attached budget includes a tax increase to the index of 3.2% as allowed by the Act 1 Index for 2017-18.
After reviewing the presentation and discussing several variables that will change over the next couple months, the administration proposed adoption of the Act 1 Index Resolution that states we will not raise taxes over the allowed Act 1 Index and we will not seek any Exceptions or Referendums.
Central York School District Board of Directors will have a motion to approve the preliminary budget in accordance with state law on its December 12, 2016 Regular (Action) Meeting Agenda. The District will continue to review, refine and discuss the 2017-2018 General Fund Budget publicly in the coming months. We will communicate opportunities to learn more about and discuss the budget with our community as well.

Preparing for the Future
Administration, Board Share Video
During the recent School Board Planning Meeting, Central York School District Board of School Directors and Administration shared with the public a video designed to encourage today's learners (and families, educators and community members) to consider how to approach life and learning in order to create a well-educated AND employed work force.
The
video, included above, discusses the importance of students exploring career options early, so they can make informed decisions when choosing post-secondary options like college, technical/trade schools and more.
Central York School District places an emphasis on immersing learners in real-world, real-life work from an early age, and provides numerous opportunities for learners to explore career choices and trades throughout their education. For more information on any of these programs, please contact us at rgrove@cysd.k12.pa.us or see your school counselor.

CYSD Joins Global Hour of Code Effort
High School Learners Host Family Workshop
Every one of the more than 5,000 learners in Central York School District joined the largest learning event in history, The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 5-11, 2016).
From Kindergarten through 12th grade, learners and educators throughout Central York School District participated in some effort to encourage students to create, connect, communicate and collaborate through coding.
The international movement, sponsored by the nonprofit Code.org, encourages a celebration of 21st century skills for success. For examples of Central York School District's efforts, please see the pictures and articles, below or visit us on Twitter, @centralyorksd, where many more pictures and classroom highlights from Hour of Code 2016 are available.
In Central York School District, teachers such as Mr. Christopher Sweitzer, Stony Brook Elementary School, invited guests including state senators, community leaders and district administrators to try coding with his second-grade learners. Pictured, above, Senator Toomey Field Representative Rachel Comman learns about coding from one of Mr. Sweitzer's students.
To encourage family involvement in coding, High School learners on the student-run iTeam planned and organized a successful evening workshop for families of all ages from 6-8PM December 7 at the High School Library & Learning HUB.
The workshop encouraged families and learners to attend and try hands-on and technology-based activities (such as the one pictured here, at right) to help build problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
