February 11, 2022
Greetings!

2022 is well underway and the staff at ZentangleHQ is buzzing with all of the energy that comes with a new year. We have a lot to look forward to and much to be grateful for in 2022.

As we begin this year, we have a few announcements and CZT housekeeping items we wanted to share with you all.

Enjoy!
A New Zentangle Logo
As the Zentangle Method continues to grow in the Mandarin speaking areas, we have been exploring ways to communicate our brand in those communities. This presented an interesting puzzle of how to use a pictographic language to represent English letter sounds. So we combined the two!

We asked the Created With Love (CWL) team in Taipei and Shanghai to explain the background of the characters and the style of this presentation which they chose to integrate with the traditional Zentangle brand.

We think you will enjoy and appreciate the thought and care that went into their process.

Created With Love staff write:

We are thrilled to take this opportunity to explain more about the literal meaning of "Chan Rao" and why we choose them as the Chinese characters for the Zentangle brand. The word "Zentangle" is a beautiful combination of "Zen" and "tangle". Our initial intention was to figure out the translation for the individual wording.

The Chinese pronunciation of 禪 (Chan) is very similar to "Zen", and it also perfectly matches the English translation. 禪 (Chan) represents a peaceful and meditative mindset.

繞 (Rao) "to unite or knit together" is the translation we use for "Tangle." 繞 (Rao) can also be explained as a metaphor of flexibility or freewill creation.

Furthermore, we noticed the pronunciation of the combination, 禪繞 (Chan Rao) has a pleasing attractive that caries a sense of intimacy and well-being.

With all above considerations, we decided to use 禪繞 (Chan Rao) as the Chinese characters of Zentangle.

The 禪繞 (Chan Rao) calligraphy design of these two characters combine two different styles of calligraphy from two Chinese calligraphers. We used their beautiful copybooks with tiny modification.
禪 (Chan)
We take this font from a Ming dynasty calligrapher, Dong Qichang's calligraphy.
His running script style is flowing and natural. His writing strokes may seem to be casual and as easy as falling off a log, but it is a result of great skill and passion.

This character of 禪 (Chan) was a vivid work engraved on a stele, and its last vertical stroke is like a drop of water extending downward, with a calm feeling brought about by a steady downward movement.

繞 (Rao)
We take this the font from a Yuan dynasty calligrapher, Rao Jie. His style of running and cursive script is heroic, confident, and flowing. He wrote this character 繞 (Rao) in running script written on cotton paper.

When CWL designed this character, it was the beginning of the penultimate stroke of 禪 (Chan). It forms an organic combination and makes the overall composition a layering of varied textures.

Looking at the overall design, we see a style that combines running script and cursive script. The combination includes an original formal font and a casual style. This combination visually combines complex and simplified Mandarin and blurs the boundary between the two fonts. In this way, whether tanglers use complex or simplified Chinese, all can experience a close relation with this composition.

Certificates
We have received several questions about offering certificates to your students for completing one of your Zentangle classes. This is a familiar practice particularly when students need to document attendance for Continuing Education Credits.

If you do offer certificates, it is important to make it clear that the certificate is coming from you, the CZT, and not from Zentangle, Inc. For those who offer attendance certificates to your students, please follow these guidelines:

  • CZTs may use Zentangle and CZT logos. If the Zentangle class is in a Mandarin language area, we encourage the use of 禪繞 Zentangle logo.
  • Zentangle artwork on the certificate should be drawn by the CZT. It should not so closely resemble certificates given by Zentangle, Inc, Created with Love, or conZentric that it might confuse someone about who issued the certificate
  • Certificates must include disclaimer: “This attendance certificate is issued by [CZT NAME], a Certified Zentangle Teacher. This certificate is not a teaching authorization. For more information see zentangle.com.”

If you have any questions, please email julie@zentangle.com.
