Cactus District Weekly Update
| | 🌵 Let’s Stick Together… on Facebook and Instagram! 🌵 | | |
Wishing everyone a wonderful and safe weekend as we celebrate these accomplishments and keep working together to support the people and programs that make Glendale shine.
Councilmember Lupe Conchas
| | 20 years ago, the doors to this Glendale gem swung open, and generations of families have been making memories ever since. From kids learning to swim and climbing the rock wall to adults making lifelong friends, the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center (FRAC) has been a place to connect and grow. FRAC recently celebrated 20 years with a Roaring '20s bash. | | | | Click below for game-day parking details, including parking maps, clear-bag policy, and tailgating information. | | WHERE IS COUNCILMAN CONCHAS? | | | | |
This week, I attended the Palm Shadows Mobile Home Park Association's monthly resident meeting to build excitement for the upcoming GAIN night.
I also gave updates regarding public safety, fire, water, homelessness, housing, heat relief, and traffic and speeding enforcement.
It's always a pleasure to spend time with the residents of Palm Shadows.

- Get up close with fire trucks & equipment
- Try your hand at fire extinguisher training
- Learn Hands-Only CPR

| | | |
Our Transportation Right-of-Way crew recently tackled a GlendaleOne service request for the Patrick Lane channel, a half-mile stretch that hadn’t seen maintenance in years. With no equipment access and temperatures near 110°F, the team completed the cleanup entirely by hand—removing thick vegetation, weeds, and small trees. Their dedication restored the channel to a safer, cleaner state.
Thank you to our hardworking crew for their commitment to Glendale’s neighborhoods!

Stay safe this Halloween and remember to use your head before your feet when crossing the street!
Children are four times more likely to be hit by a car on Halloween night than any other night of the year. Let’s ensure everyone has a fun and safe evening by taking extra precautions. Wear brightly colored costumes and incorporate reflective material into your costume and trick-or-treat bag so you can BE SAFE & BE SEEN!
The Glendale Transportation Department is offering FREE "BE SAFE, BE SEEN" reflective Trick-Or-Treat bags and safety tips at all Glendale Public Library locations throughout the month of October. Visit your local Glendale Library today, while supplies last!

Glendale Recycles Day
In recognition of America Recycles Day, which will be celebrated on Sunday, November 15, and is designed to promote waste reduction and recycling education throughout our community, the City of Glendale's Solid Waste & Recycling Division is hosting Glendale Recycles Day on Saturday, November 14, at Raymond S. Kellis High School. This event will provide residents with a convenient opportunity to responsibly recycle, reuse, or securely dispose of materials that should not go into their curbside recycling containers.
In addition, the event supports the City's ongoing efforts to reduce recycling contamination and keep potentially hazardous lithium-ion batteries out of our collection trucks and facilities.
Event Details
- Saturday, November 14, 2026
- 8:00–11:00 a.m.
- Raymond S. Kellis High School
- 8990 W. Orangewood Ave., Glendale, AZ 85305
- Drive-through event – residents will remain in their vehicles
| |
Residents will be able to bring:
- Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries (2 lbs. or less and removed from devices)
- Cell phones (donated to the Glendale Advocacy Center to support domestic violence victims)
- E-waste (no TVs or appliances)
- Gently used clothing (donated to Vineyard Church’s clothing bank for reuse)
- Documents for on-site shredding (limit of 3 banker boxes per vehicle)
We are excited to hold the event at Raymond S. Kellis High School, with Kellis DECA students volunteering alongside City staff. This gives local students an opportunity to participate in community service while learning more about recycling, waste reduction, and sustainability.

Keeping your home safe starts with knowing where the risks are.
The Glendale Fire Department’s Fire & Home Safety Program provides homeowners and renters with education, resources, and practical feedback to help reduce fire and injury risks throughout the home.
Our Community Risk Reduction Team can evaluate your home and provide guidance on:
- Fire extinguishers
- Slips and fall hazards
- Emergency exits
- Smoke alarms
| | |
Home Safety Starts at Home
The Glendale Fire Department’s Home Safety for Seniors Program helps older adults and individuals with special needs live more safely and independently in their homes.
Through our Residential Lockbox Program, qualifying Glendale residents can receive a free residential lockbox, giving emergency responders secure access to the home when an occupant is unable to open the door.
Residents may qualify if they:
| | |
- Are 62 or older, or have a special need or disability
- Live in the City of Glendale
- Live alone with a chronic illness, are at risk of falling, or have a history of emergency calls
- Are referred by Glendale Fire or Police
- Information associated with each lockbox is securely maintained within Glendale’s emergency dispatch system so responding Fire and Police personnel have the information they need when seconds matter.

Battery and phone charging safety starts at home.
Something as simple as where and how you charge your phone can make a big difference in preventing fires. Use approved chargers, charge devices on a hard flat surface, keep phones and batteries off beds and couches, avoid overloading outlets, and replace damaged cords or swollen batteries right away.
If your device gets hot while charging, unplug it and inspect it before using it again. Small safety habits help protect your home and your family.
| | We’re looking for volunteers to take part in a special series of community tree‑planting events celebrating America’s semi‑quincentennial anniversary, 250 years of shared history, community, and progress. We would love to have you join us in planting a greener future for Glendale. If you’re interested in volunteering, sign up through our volunteer portal, Plant 250. | | LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS | | | | |

Why are we drawn to such places as the Grand Canyon? Why are people moved to travel from all around the world to visit and explore them? In this presentation, we will discuss people’s relationship with the natural landscape with a particular focus on some of Arizona’s most iconic locations. What are the ethical implications of our encounters with these natural wonders? What can philosophy teach us about the interaction between humanity, beauty, and sublime nature? Presenter Matthew Goodwin has a Ph.D. in philosophy and is the co-founder of Sedona Philosophy, which offers guided hikes and retreats. This program is produced in partnership with Arizona Humanities.
