Jill Ellis, the former head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, will speak at this year's annual conference. Ellis is the second head coach to win consecutive World Cup titles since 1938. In July, the League of California Cities Board of Directors approved proposed bylaws amendments to enhance Cal Cities governance. These amendments will go before the General Assembly for a vote at the Annual Business meeting during the Annual Conference and Expo. Read more

The National League of Cities is accepting applications for leadership positions on its board of directors, federal advocacy committees, member councils, and constituency groups. City officials applying for the board of directors or second vice-president positions may request an endorsement from Cal Cities. Read more

Thursday, Sept. 1, 1:30 p.m. — The legislative session ends on Aug. 31 and Gov. Gavin Newsom has until Sept. 30 to sign or veto measures passed by the Legislature. This will be the final opportunity for city officials to voice their support or opposition to the Governor. Parks can provide health, climate, and economic benefits. However, these benefits are effectively inaccessible for one-third of Americans, particularly those in low-income communities of color. The Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership Program helps close that gap by funding the acquisition or development of new parks in economically disadvantaged cities with little to no access to public outdoor recreation opportunities. Applications for the first round of consideration are due Sept. 1. The California Department of Parks and Recreation will also hold virtual application workshops on Aug. 12 and 15. Read more

Aug. 12 is the final day for bills to be heard in the Legislature’s policy committee hearings. However, all eyes are on the Aug. 11 Senate and Assembly appropriations committees for their biannual financial culling. Known as the suspense file, these appropriations hearings allow lawmakers to review the financial costs of certain bills before they reach the Assembly or Senate floor for a vote. This year, an estimated 900 bills will go through this process. Read more

Cal Cities is accepting leadership applications for the chair and vice chair positions for all seven policy committees. Made up of city officials from throughout the state, policy committees actively shape and steer Cal Cities’ advocacy efforts. The chair and vice chair roles are critical positions, as they work with the committee to develop and provide recommendations to the Cal Cities Board of Directors to determine the organization's policy positions. Applications must be submitted online by Aug. 12. Read more

Cal Cities is accepting online applications for the Coastal Cities Group Leadership Committee through Aug. 12. Composed of the 61 cities located within the coastal zone, the Coastal Cities Group collaborates on sea level rise mitigation efforts, land use regulations, and other coastal issues. Applicants will be reviewed on their leadership skills, policy awareness, expertise on coastal issues, and experience within Cal Cities. Applications must be submitted online by Aug. 12. Read more

Aug. 12 and Aug 26 — The Institute for Local Government is hosting a series of free, in-person trainings for planning commissioners. Participants will learn best practices, emerging trends, and important lessons from experts in the field and fellow planning commissioners. Space is limited and registration is required. The Aug. 12 session is for cities in Alpine, Mono, and Inyo counties; Aug. 26 is for cities in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Read more

Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2:00 p.m. — The Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) recently updated its behested payments reporting regulations. To help elected officials navigate these new requirements, the FPPC has created a related fact sheet and is holding a webinar about the new requirements. The training is specifically recommended for elected officials, agency employees whose duties include receiving behested payment reports, and agency counsel. The webinar will be recorded and posted on the FPPC’s website. Register today
