Cal Cities will hold a news conference to outline what cities need in the 2022-23 State Budget to help achieve shared local and state priorities regarding housing supply and greenhouse gas reduction goals, as well as reimburse cities for costs related to state mandates. Read more

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has published a list of answers to frequently asked questions about the use of State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds, which were authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act. Additionally, several national organizations and federal agencies will lead webinars about broadband access and related federal funding opportunities. Read more

May 11-13 — Taking place in Sacramento, the City Leaders Summit is a new event where city officials can influence policy decisions in the Capitol and expand their knowledge and policy chops during three days of in-depth sessions and discussions on the key issues facing cities. Online registration is closed, however, city officials can register on-site starting May 11 at 8:30 a.m. Read more

The League of California Cities is seeking dynamic, forward-looking topics for two December conferences, the Fire Chiefs Leadership Seminar and Municipal Finance Institute. Both events take place at the Hyatt Regency Monterey, Dec. 7-8, 2022. Submissions from individuals, groups, businesses, and organizations on any topic of interest are welcome. Read more

The California Statewide Communities Development Authority recently announced the issuance of more than $10 million in affordable housing bonds for apartments in the cities of Corning and Clearlake. Both apartment communities will undergo renovations to ensure that residents have an updated, safe, and affordable community to call home for years to come. Read more

The League of California Cities has updated its Summary of Existing Policy and Guiding Principles publication to reflect policies adopted within the past two years. Cal Cities uses the publication as a reference tool when reviewing new legislation. Cities are encouraged to use the publication themselves as they consider positions on legislation introduced at the state and federal levels that would impact cities. Read more

The League of California Cities is urging the state to include $180 million in the 2022-23 State Budget to help cities develop and implement organic waste recycling programs. To help inform and bolster advocacy efforts, Cal Cities is collecting information about the impacts of changing recycling markets and recently enacted organic waste regulations on cities. City officials have until Monday, May 9 to respond. Read more

Cal Cities is collecting responses for its biennial Local Streets and Roads Assessment survey. The data will be used to demonstrate the positive, cost-effective impacts of SB 1 to policymakers. Responding to this survey is critical, as every missing response weakens our case for further legislative action. This year, the League of California Cities received more than 150 applications for its Helen Putnam Award for Excellence program. The annual program honors the outstanding efforts and innovative solutions made by city governments to improve services and residents’ quality of life. Cal Cities is recruiting 60 volunteers to serve as judges and pick this year's winning programs. Volunteer applications are due by May 13. Read more

May 13 and May 20 — The Institute for Local Government is hosting a series of free, in-person trainings for planning commissioners. Participants will hear best practices, emerging trends, and lessons learned from experts in the field and fellow planning commissioners. Space is limited and registration is required. May 13 is for cities in Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Nevada, and Amador counties; May 20 is for cities in San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, and Madera counties. Read more
