Join our entrepreneurial maker community at a national make/SHIFT Makerspace Ecosystem Summit in Irvine from April 24-26 hosted by the CCC Maker initiative and NACCE - The National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship. Connect to a community of educational makerspaces, entrepreneurship programs and partners in workforce development innovation. Meet statewide and national educators, K-12 and community college leadership, foundations and policy makers who are looking to the makerspace movement for innovation, inspiration and collaboration.

Register before January 31 for the super early bird discount for the make/SHIFT Summit.

Project Updates January 2019
Recent CCC Maker initiative activities included:
  • CCC Maker provided professional development at Sacramento City College to the college teams from Allan Hancock College, Cabrillo College, City College of San Francisco, Folsom Lake College, Sacramento City College and Sierra College that will be piloting the next iteration of the Makermatic team internship program this semester. 
  • CCC Maker with the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship announced that registration is open for make/SHIFT, a national Makerspace Ecosystem Summit in Irvine California on April 24-26.
  • To tell our story of building a statewide college makerspace community, CCC Maker is planning videos, student projects and a legacy publication that will be shown at the make/SHIFT conference and Maker Faire Bay Area. 
  • Videos have been added to the resources tab on the CCC Maker website and include videos from colleges as well as the makermatic project. 
  • CCC Maker colleges submitted their quarterly Narrative and Fiscal reports through December 2018. You can see the reported data by clicking "Metrics" on the home page. 
  • The CCC Maker initiative submitted the quarterly report to the California Community College Chancellor's Office and it is posted in the About section of the website.
CCC Maker Initiative Makes Progress in Fall Quarter

Between October 1 and December 31, 2018, CCC Maker colleges continue to report increased participation and impact of their makerspaces.

Colleges reported that: 
  • 99 students completed internships, and 45 employers were recruited and donated 335 hours towards CCC Maker activities
  • 8,169 students accessed college makerspaces 
  • 138 digital badges were awarded
  • 266 faculty members were engaged at CCC Maker colleges and 68 professional development events were conducted
  • 142 college courses accessed makerspaces
  • More than 9,700 volunteer hours supported college makerspaces
The initiative reported: 
  • The initiative piloted the CCC Maker team internship Makermatic program with  Sacramento City College
  • With the California Council on Science and Technology, CCC Maker held the Fall Symposium on Sustainability hosted by College of the Canyons on Friday, November 30 and attended by over 50 college representatives
  • Four webinars were conducted related to sustainability
  • Deborah Bird, Technical Assistance Provider, presented at the Maker Ed annual convening in October
  • The 81-page CCC Maker Startup Guide was downloaded 147 times this quarter, a 150% growth for a total of 447 downloads  
  • CCC Maker newsletter recipients grew by 512 in this quarter
What is Happening in the College Makerspaces 

At the Butte College Create Space, 12 students designed, printed and produced over 250 "Butte Strong Kid" and "Butte Strong Teacher" shirts on the Epson DTG t-shirt printer so they would be ready for the first week back to school after the Camp Fire in Paradise.

Cabrillo College with Goodwill Central Coast arranged for Makerspace interns to visit the headquarters of Plantronics, a leading producer of commercial and personal headsets, where they talked with engineers, industrial designers and marketing managers.

Folsom Lake College is growing mushrooms and experimenting with making their own growth forms as part of their expanding biotinkering and fermentation science in the makerspace.

The Laney College FabLab is co-leading the Oakland Fab City initiative that has inspired the creation of a connected network of FabLabs that will be placed throughout the city.

The Moorpark College makerspace designed and fabricated a giant X for a December RAIDERx talk, an original talk on campus about innovation, science, technology and other topics presented in a style similar to a TED talk.

Moreno Valley College hosted the state round of the CyberPatriot National Competition, designed to inspire K-12 students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines .

Sierra College mathematics faculty members, Katie Lucero and Lynn Harrison-Benevidez developed and delivered a Faculty Maker Camp for nine instructors in December which included learning to use laser cutters and sewing machines, brainstorming ideas for integrating making into their curriculum and developing prototypes and/or manipulatives to use in the classroom.
