Project Updates June-July 2017
Recent CCC Maker project activities included:
  • 28 colleges submitted proposals outlining their implementation plans on June 16
  • Deborah Bird and Salomon Davila, CCC Maker TAP, met with colleges to refine their implementation plans prior to the proposal deadline
  • Eric Ullrich, Hacker Lab, conducted a webinar on Digital Badging in June
  • CCC Maker conducted a survey of Seed Grant Makerspace Startup participants
  • The initiative was selected to present at the International Symposium on Academic Makerspaces (ISAM) in late September
24 colleges awarded $6M in CCC Maker Implementation Grants

Twenty-four California Community Colleges have been awarded $6,000,000 in grants, renewable for a second year, from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office to participate in the implementation phase of the CCC Maker Initiative.
 
The colleges will use the funding to create or strengthen inclusive makerspaces that will change students' educational experience and foster innovation and entrepreneurial skills that prepare them for impactful careers. Awarded colleges will establish makerspace communities, place students in internships, develop curriculum that prepares students with 21st century skills, and participate in the CCC Maker statewide network of college makerspaces. Makerspace Seed Grant Results and Resources

Twenty-eight colleges submitted unique plans documenting 1000+ ecosystem partners, 1,000+ student and community activity participants, 200+ engaged faculty, 50+ administrators and 100+ student team members. Together, the colleges proposed 1,400 student internships and leveraged more than $10M in matched resources. 

The CCC Maker initiative produced a shared body of knowledge including 14 recorded webinars, accessible through the project's website. Technical assistance included 12 workshops and regional meet-ups, over 130 requests for one-on-one consulting, 15 site visits and 40 college-to-college connections.      
CCC Maker Helps Students Chart New Paths

CCC Maker is one of the initiatives featured (on page 11) in a new report, Charting New Paths to the Future, from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office under the Doing What MATTERS for Jobs and the Economy framework.
Kick-off events for Awarded CCC Maker Colleges
August  17 & 18 in Berkeley

To kick-off the implementation phase of the CCC Maker Initiative, CCC Maker is holding an interactive convening for Implementation Grant Awardees from 1 PM - 5 PM on Thursday, August 17 in Berkeley. Participants will be given practical information to take the lead in moving forward with their plans, get to know college team members in the community of practice and develop student-focused spaces and activities.

On the evening of August 17, teams will gather for an off-site dinner and networking event.

On Friday, August 18, from 9 AM - 3 PM, the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST) will conduct a CCC Maker - sponsored symposium.

Information on how to register will be sent to Awarded Colleges. RSVP's must be received by July 24.
Join Maker Share to Gain Ideas & Share What You are Doing

Maker Share is a "show and tell" hub  created by Make: and Intel for makers to share their projects and discover new opportunities to learn, connect and contribute. There is a "Mission" section that brings together makers to create for a purpose. College makers may want to join this online platform for innovation and collaboration to showcase their work. Just register by setting up a profile and begin adding projects to your portfolio.
