Recap of 2023 Cal State LA Commencement

Thousands of Cal State LA students graduate during Commencement 2023

Nearly 6,000 Cal State LA students graduated during Commencement 2023, which took place during the culmination of Cal State LA’s 75th anniversary. Graduating students had their names called out as they crossed the stage in front of their family and friends during the festivities. “We are so proud of the Class of 2023 for achieving their dreams of earning a university degree,” Cal State LA President William A. Covino said. Commencement 2023 was Covino’s final Commencement at Cal State LA as president. He is retiring in July. Experience the joyous celebration through our Commencement 2023 video. Cal State LA celebrates distinguished women

Cal State LA honored a select group of women faculty, staff, administrators, students, and alumni for their outstanding achievements and significant contributions to the University and the community. The annual Distinguished Women Awards was coordinated by the Division of Student Life, University-Student Union, and Cross Cultural Centers. It was held Tuesday, May 9, in the South Village multi-purpose room.

Cal State LA to commemorate Juneteenth with campus celebration

The California State University Board of Trustees added June 19 (Juneteenth) as a CSU paid holiday starting this year. This follows Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday in 2021. The holiday is an annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War. The University community is invited to a Juneteenth celebration on Thursday, June 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Golden Eagle Ballroom 3. Hosted by the Staff Working Group on Belonging, Community, and Diversity, the event will feature a keynote address by David B. Green Jr., assistant professor in the Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The celebration will also include educational activities, conversations, and a performance by African Soul International. Light refreshments will be served at 11 a.m. and food trucks will be on campus for those who wish to purchase lunch. Register to attend by completing the online form

Cal State LA’s Pride Month celebration set for June 29

June is Pride Month, a time when the nation acknowledges and celebrates the resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community in its struggle for equality and freedom. Cal State LA will celebrate Pride Month on Thursday, June 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University Club. All staff, students, and faculty are invited to join in the festivities. The event is hosted by the Staff Working Group for Belonging, Community, and Diversity. Please check your email in the coming weeks for more information.

Silverman Gallery features an exhibit by L.A. interdisciplinary artist Jonas Kulikauskas

The Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery at Cal State LA presents an exhibition titled “I Often Forget by Jonas Kulikauskas. Kulikauskas is a Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist inspired by his Lithuanian heritage, family, and faith. This exhibit will be on display now through July 7. The gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from 12 to 5 p.m. For more information, call 323-343-4040.

Cal State LA BioStart boot camp is accepting applications

The Cal State LA BioStart Bioscience Entrepreneurs Boot Camp, a free five-week intensive training program, is now accepting applications for its summer cohort. The program prepares emerging bioscience entrepreneurs to launch their own bioscience ventures, and will run from July 11 to August 10, 2023. Luckman Virtual Experience presents Maya Arce

The Luckman Fine Arts Complex’s latest installment of its Virtual Experience series, featuring mariachi singer Maya Arce, is now available to stream online. Arce is a Mexican-American musician who performs mariachi music as a vocalist and violinist. For additional events, visit the Luckman website.

Cal State LA Preview Day draws thousands

More than 4,500 people, including more than 2,300 prospective students, visited the campus on Saturday, April 15, for Cal State LA Preview Day. All high school seniors and transfer students admitted for fall 2023 were invited to campus to learn about everything that Cal State LA offers and why they should become a Golden Eagle. The students and their families took tours of the campus and residence halls and had an opportunity to meet with University representatives from various colleges, student services departments, and student organizations.

Counseling services available for campus community

Employees may find counseling assistance through the Employee Assistance Program, LifeMatters, by calling 1-800-367-7474 or visiting the LifeMatters website. Cal State LA’s company password is GOEAGLES. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides services to students throughout the semester. Counselors will be available to address issues such as anxiety management, emotional wellness, mindfulness, and more. For details, call 323-343-3314 or visit the CAPS website.  

In Memoriam

Kenneth Anderson, emeritus professor of microbiology in the College of Natural and Social Sciences, passed away on March 28, 2023. A Cal State LA faculty for more than three decades, Anderson taught classes in microbiology and organized science education workshops for secondary teachers. A celebration of life ceremony was held on Sunday, May 21, at Grace Community Church in Texas.
