Cal State LA to serve as Vote Center in November
Cal State LA is designated by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk to serve as a Vote Center for the California’s November General Election. The Cal State LA Vote Center will be open to the campus and surrounding communities from Saturday, Nov. 2, through Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 5. At the Vote Center, individuals will be able to cast their ballot in person, drop off their vote-by-mail ballot, or register to vote in person if they miss the regular voter registration deadline on Oct. 21. The center will be located in the Los Angeles Rooms of the University-Student Union. The L.A. County Registrar-Recorder’s Office has also installed an official ballot drop box permanently on campus. It is located near Lot 4, across from the Career Center.

Cal State LA celebrates Disability Acceptance Month
Cal State LA is celebrating Disability Acceptance Month throughout October by promoting awareness, inclusion, and understanding of disability culture. The celebration features workshops and panel discussions, as well as its annual 2K Journey on Monday, Oct. 21. Students, faculty, and staff are all welcome to participate. EagleCon 2024 to honor industry icons, celebrate diversity in science fiction and fantasy genres
This year’s EagleCon, a virtual sci-fi and fantasy conference hosted by Cal State LA and the Art Directors Guild, IATSE Local 800, will honor legendary actor Edward James Olmos, visual effects pioneer Harrison Ellenshaw, and award-winning actress Dr. Dawnn Lewis. With the theme of “Unfrakking the Future: Apocalypse and Its Alternatives,” the convention celebrates the 20th anniversary of Battlestar Galactica, the 25th anniversary of The Matrix, and the 40th anniversary of The Terminator over two days, October 15-16. Great California ShakeOut to take place on Oct. 17
Be prepared to Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:17 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, during the Great California ShakeOut Earthquake Drill. Faculty and staff members who are on campus should be prepared to evacuate to their designated assembly area and check in with their building coordinator when the alarm sounds. As a reminder, please update your mobile phone information in the campus GET or HRM systems in case of an emergency. Cal State LA hosts an Endometriosis Community Event
The Chin Family Institute for Nursing at Cal State LA will host an “Endometriosis Community Event,” in partnership with Chism-Endo advocacy group and The Jackson Laboratory, on Friday, Oct. 18, at 5 p.m. in the University-Student Union Theatre. The awareness event will include a screening of the groundbreaking PBS documentary about endometriosis, Below the Belt, followed by a patient-led panel discussion concerning accessible, equitable, and expert-level endometriosis patient care in Los Angeles. Donate to Cal State LA Canned Food Drive
Support families in our community by donating to the Cal State LA Canned Food Drive, a collaboration between the University and the nonprofit United American Indian Involvement, Inc. Donations of canned goods will be accepted from Oct. 21 to Nov. 15. Drop off donations at the Center for Student Involvement or the Center for Engagement, Service, and the Public Good. Pat Brown Institute to host Voter Fest 2024
The Pat Brown Institute at Cal State LA will host a Voter Fest 2024: The Art of Civic Engagement on Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the University-Student Union Plaza. This arts-focused festival encourages hands-on participation and underscores the power of voting. The festival will bring together campus organizations, student clubs, faculty from diverse departments, and community groups. The civic-themed activities will include games, a selfie station, and craft-making, like tote decorating and button-making, and an interactive “zine” activity. This is part of the Pat Brown Institute’s Fall 2024 Civic Series.

Sikand SITI Center to hold Pollution Control and Climate Mitigation Conference
Join the Sikand Center for Sustainable and Intelligent Infrastructure and the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology for a Pollution Control and Climate Mitigation Conference on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in Golden Eagle Ballroom I. The conference will bring together faculty researchers, their external collaborators, and practitioners to discuss and share innovative solutions to pressing environmental challenges. The event aims to build capacity in the field of pollution control and climate mitigation and foster collaborative networks for interdisciplinary research. Students, faculty, staff, and community members can give blood on campus during the American Red Cross blood drive on Wednesday, Oct. 23, and Monday, Nov. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The mobile blood drive bus will be in Lot 4. Schedule an appointment online.

Luckman Gallery features an exhibit on ‘Sinks: Places We Call Home’
The Luckman Gallery is hosting an exhibition, Sinks: Places We Call Home, that features new works by Los Angeles-based artists Maru García and Beatriz Jaramillo. This exhibit is organized by Self Help Graphics & Art and highlights the environmental disparities created by the Exide battery plant in Vernon and the former Athens Tank/ExxonMobil site in Willowbrook. The exhibit will be on display through Feb. 15, 2025. The gallery hours are Wednesdays through Fridays, noon to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cal State LA began to accept applications for admission for fall semester 2025 starting on Oct. 1. Students interested in attending Cal State LA can apply online using the Cal State Apply application portal. The priority application deadline is Dec. 2. Prospective students and their families are invited to Eagle Fest on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., to see our beautiful campus and learn why they should apply to Cal State LA.
