Berenecea Johnson Eanes appointed president of Cal State LA
The California State University Board of Trustees has appointed Dr. Berenecea Johnson Eanes to serve as president of Cal State LA. Eanes currently serves as president of York College, City University of New York. “I am honored to join this outstanding university and its vibrant and diverse campus community,” Eanes said. “I look forward to engaging and collaborating with Cal State LA’s talented students, staff and faculty to continue the institution’s journey to new heights in student success, research, scholarship and creative activity, and community engagement.” Eanes will become the university’s first woman president. She succeeds Interim President Leroy M. Morishita, who has served in the role since the retirement of President Emeritus William A. Covino at the end of July 2023. Eanes will be Cal State LA’s ninth president.

Chicanx Latinx Heritage Month celebration begins this month
Cal State LA is celebrating Chicanx Latinx Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 to recognize the histories, cultures, and contributions of the Latinx community in the U.S. This year’s theme is “Joy, Ease, and Community," making space for our Chicanx Latinx community to enhance togetherness and joy. Benefits enrollment period is now open
The annual Open Enrollment period for CalPERS health, dental, vision, Flex Cash, Dependent Care Reimbursement (DCRA), Health Care Reimbursement (HCRA), or voluntary benefits plans is open now until Oct. 13. Eligible employees may enroll, change plans, and add eligible family members during this time. The effective date for all updates is Jan. 1, 2024. Full details on health plans are available on the CalPERS website.

Cal State LA will begin to accept applications for admission for fall semester 2024 on Oct. 1. Students interested in attending Cal State LA can apply online using the Cal State Apply application portal. The priority application deadline is Nov. 30. Prospective students and their families are invited to Golden Eagle Fest on Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to see our beautiful campus and learn why they should apply to Cal State LA.

Silverman Gallery exhibit features works by artist Kim Abeles
The Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery at Cal State LA is presenting an exhibition featuring “Kim Abeles: Social Furniture (1976-2023).” This exhibit is on display now until Oct. 29. Abeles is an artist of phenomenal vision, addressing such issues as social justice, the environment, and education in her art. Her contributions during the last five decades have been enormous, and this exhibit offers a sampling of her significant accomplishments. The exhibit reception will be Saturday, Sept. 23, from 1 to 6 p.m., and the artist walkthrough will be Saturday, Oct. 21, from 12 to 3 p.m.

In Memoriam
Lili Tabrizi, professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology, passed away on Sept. 5, 2023. Tabrizi joined Cal State LA's faculty in 1987 and taught classes in control systems, communication systems, electromagnetics, and probability and statistics. She also served as chair of her department’s Control Systems Committee. Details about the memorial service will be shared when the information is available.

Sign up for Mental Health First Aid Training
Faculty and staff are invited to participate in Mental Health First Aid Training. This program teaches participants how to assist someone experiencing a crisis. Participants learn risk factors and warning signs of serious and developing mental health problems, how to talk with a person who might be experiencing a mental health problem, and strategies to help identify the next best steps. The training is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please check the training website for registration information.

Early registration application open for student groups
Student groups seeking early registration status may submit applications to the Student Policy Committee of the Academic Senate. Program advisors or administrators must complete an SPC Early Registration Application. The submission deadline is Friday, Dec. 1, at 5 p.m.
