Fall Tips for Rancho Murieta Residents

As the seasons change, fall in Rancho Murieta brings cooler evenings, foggy mornings, and plenty of leaves. Here are some simple tips from Cal-Waste to keep your home and neighborhood clean, safe, and sustainable this season:

  • Leaf & Yard Waste: Place fallen leaves, branches, and other yard trimmings in your green waste cart. Keeping debris out of drains helps prevent flooding and protects the Cosumnes River watershed.

  • Pumpkin Disposal: When Halloween is over, pumpkins belong in your green waste cart, not the trash. They break down naturally and are turned into compost.

  • Foggy Morning Safety: Shorter days and foggy mornings mean reduced visibility. Please set carts out the night before or by 5:00 AM and make sure they’re clearly visible and spaced 3 feet apart for safe collection.

  • Holiday Waste Prep: With Thanksgiving and the holidays around the corner, remember: food scraps can go into your green waste cart, cardboard boxes should be flattened and placed in recycling, and lids should always close completely.

  • Stay Fire-Safe: As you prepare for cozy fall evenings, don’t place fireplace ash in your carts until it has completely cooled. Hot ash is a fire hazard and can damage collection trucks.

A little preparation this season goes a long way toward keeping Rancho Murieta clean, safe, and beautiful.

Are You Recycling Hazardous Waste?

Leesa takes you onto the tipping floor of our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), where all of Rancho Murieta’s recycling is dropped off. Lately, we’ve been finding a dangerous trend: batteries in recycling carts.

Here’s why it’s a big problem:

  • Batteries are heavy and sift to the bottom of the pile.
  • When our front loader crushes them, they spark and start fires in the recycling.
  • Even small batteries can ignite a fire inside our trucks when the compaction paddle breaks them open.

Please handle batteries and other hazardous waste properly by taking them to a Household Hazardous Waste facility.

Simple Battery Storage Tips at Home

  • Store used batteries in a sturdy box or plastic container.
  • Cover the ends of batteries with tape to prevent sparks.
  • Keep the container in a cool, dry place until drop-off.

Why Hoses And Wires Can't Go In Your Recycling Cart

Not everything belongs in your recycling cart. Some items can actually cause serious damage. Garden hoses, extension cords, and wires wrap around recycling equipment, break machinery, and can even snap back to shatter truck windshields. This puts our drivers at risk.

Watch this short video to see why it is so important to keep hoses, cords, and wires out of your recycling cart. Please remember to place these items in the trash, not in recycling.

By keeping hazardous items out of your recycling cart, you help protect our drivers, keep equipment running safely, and support a stronger recycling program for the Rancho Murieta community.
