CalOptima Health Announces $52.3 Million in Funding for Homeless Housing | | |
CalOptima Health’s Board approved $52.3 million in funding on June 1 to develop housing options for people experiencing homelessness through a state incentive program paired with Board-committed reserves. Previously, CalOptima Health convened our first-ever meeting bringing together Orange County organizations that develop affordable housing. More than 40 representatives gathered to learn about the funding opportunity and we look forward to working with the community to make a positive impact through an upcoming grant process. CalOptima Health Chief Operating Officer Yunkyung Kim attended U.S. Representative Young Kim's (CA-40) Healthcare Advisory Group to provide an update on CalOptima Health’s investments in local initiatives, such as street medicine, recuperative care and housing for vulnerable seniors and grants for students pursuing a master’s degree in social work at California State University, Fullerton. The advisory group discussion is the first of many that bring the region’s largest providers together to improve the delivery of care in Orange County.

CalOptima Health Hosts Member Baby Shower | On June 2, more than 100 Medi-Cal members in Orange County who are new or expecting parents and their families attended CalOptima Health’s first member baby shower. Organized by our maternity health program, Bright Steps, the event offered games and activities as well as opportunities to connect with 11 community-based organizations, including CHOC, the County of Orange Social Services Agency (SSA), the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program and doulas. Giveaways included snack bags, coolers and diapers. | | |

ABC7 Interviews Behavioral Health Leader on Student Mental Health Interventions | On May 25, Carmen Katsarov, LPCC, CCM, CalOptima Health Executive Director of Behavioral Health Integration, was featured in an ABC7 News interview to discuss the statewide Student Behavioral Health Incentive Program (SBHIP). CalOptima Health is working with the Orange County Department of Education and partners such as CHOC and Hazel Health to address the growing mental health crisis among children and teens with interventions in all 29 Orange County school districts. | | |
Medi-Cal/CalAIM Leader featured in the Washington Post | On May 22, Kelly Bruno-Nelson, CalOptima Health Executive Director of Medi-Cal and CalAIM, was featured in a Washington Post article sharing how CalOptima Health is supporting Orange County seniors experiencing homelessness. "The current shelter system cannot accommodate the physical needs of this population," said Bruno-Nelson. She explained that a 119-bed, first-of-its-kind unit is being created to serve as an assisted-living facility exclusively for homeless people. | | |

CalOptima Health Welcomes New Board Member |
On May 23, the Orange County Board of Supervisors unanimously appointed Norma García Guillén to the vacant seat on the CalOptima Health Board of Directors, designated for an accounting or public finance professional, or an attorney who is an active member of the State Bar. García Guillén is a commercial litigator with more than 20 years of experience in state and federal courts. She is a Founding Partner at Garcia Rainey Blank & Bowerbank LLP in Costa Mesa, and was previously an associate at Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP. She received a bachelor’s degree in Government and Latin American Studies from Smith College, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law. She was sworn in at her first Board meeting on June 1.

The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) invites community outreach teams to a webinar on how to navigate the Keep Your Community Covered - Social Press Kit. DHCS will also provide an update on the renewal phase of this campaign. The webinar will take place on Thursday, June 15, from 11-11:45 a.m. Registration for the webinar is required.

End of WIC Formula Expansion | The USDA's plan to end the temporary expanded formula options is currently in its last phase, phase 3. The temporary formula options for therapeutic formulas will end on June 30, 2023. However, Similac Alimentum ready-to-feed will continue to be available on the WIC Card until Alimentum powder returns to the marketplace. PBS SoCal Summer Learning Day | PBS SoCal is hosting a Summer Learning Day, a family event featuring fun, educational activities and resources, as well as live entertainment. The event will take place on Saturday, June 17, from 11 a.m.–5 p.m., at The Children’s Museum at La Habra (301 S. Euclid Street, La Habra). Community members and their families will receive free entry to the museum during the event hours, photo opportunities with PBS KIDS characters, music, facepainting and more. | | |
Assemblymember Diane Dixon, in coordination with Assemblymembers Laurie Davies and Kate Sanchez invite the community to the Senior Town Hall on June 16 from 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. The event will take place at the Laguna Hills Community Center and will feature talks by MemorialCare, as well as discussions on Memory Care and Alzheimer's. Attendees will also have access to free blood pressure and health screenings, while learning self-defense tools, fraud and scam prevention tips and cell phone training. RSVP is required to attend. | | |
