SONGS FOR POLITICAL ACTION
During the Great Depression, a new movement started among folklorists and and members of the American left to use folk music as an instrument of social change. The goal was to create performances that would appeal to the American working class. Much of this material was recorded for small, independent record labels or in limited editions distributed at meetings and rallies. Out of this group of progressives sprang the pioneers of the urban folk revival of the 1960s: Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Josh White, and others who used the idealism of their causes to initiate their musical careers.
