Manager's Notes

Spring has arrived and before you know it we will be in mid-summer. As I write this, we just completed the annual Pro Tennis Tournament and Top Seed Tennis Academy did an amazing job. Our Mayor, Fred Gaines and Mayor Pro Tem, David Shapiro handed out the trophies to our winners and runner-ups for the tournament. Councilmember James Bozajian came out on Friday night and honored the Top Seed Staff with certificates from the City. Even with weather delays, the tournament was able to be completed on time.
The fitness department will be losing a long time employee in Deborah Heumann to retirement. Deborah has been our fitness coordinator for many years and will be sorely missed. We want to wish her the best of luck and enjoy her retirement.
Our swim lesson registration is under way with lessons to follow real soon. Again, this summer we are having two dive-in movie nights. June 22nd will feature "Paddington 2" and July 20th will feature "Coco". Bring the family out for some summer fun and games.
Enjoy your spring and summer everyone!

Top Seed Tennis Academy
Dear Members,

The first quarter of 2018 has been exciting; from one of our most successful USTA Pro Tennis Championships, to our best junior academy numbers ever recorded with Top Seed Tennis Academy!

Speaking of our juniors - as many of you know we have incredible juniors clinics and with the addition of our new Elite Training Program we now offer instruction at every level. Programs begin with Grand Prix for children between 5-7, the Challenger group for players who are from the beginner to advanced-beginner level, Tournament Training for kids just starting out with competing tennis, the Super Excellence group for strong players, and finally the Elite clinics for children that get out early or are home schooled in order to take their tennis game to the top level.

"Top Level" players are something we take very seriously at Top Seed and we are proud to have players like Katrina Scott - a world-ranked junior and one of the best players in the USA, Lexi Ringler who at 16 years old already has a WTA World ranking, and Bruno Krenn, one of the top junior boys in Southern California at our club. Please check out our junior ladder for all the top junior players at Top Seed Tennis Academy - Calabasas at to view all the future tennis stars of tomorrow! Also, our annual Top Seed Summer Tennis Camp is almost here so sign up your children to ensure a position! Every year we have days that are filled up and we therefore have a waiting list. Information is available at the front desk or call the clinic club and ask for Terri Secondino and she can answer all your questions.
On the adult side our clinics and private lessons are extremely busy and we are in the process of hiring more tennis professionals to meet the high demand generated by our members.

At Top Seed we are not only consistently looking to improve our offering of staff coaches but ensure we continually train and educate our entire staff. In fact, please let myself or our Tennis Director, Brady Hiete know what clinics you are looking for or any other suggestions you have that will help take your tennis game to the next level!

See you on the courts!

Spring is right around the corner and hopefully bringing some nice weather too. Spring starts off the busy season in the pool area and our aquatics department has a program for everyone in the family! Ranging from lifeguard classes and swim lessons to swim team and adult's Masters swim. Check out our spring and summer recreation brochure for more program information.

Spring and summer swim team tryouts will be held the week of April 2nd-April 5th from 3:30-6:30pm. All participants (current and new) must complete a tryout with Coach Douglas. Coach Douglas will complete the tryout and assign the proper level for your swimmer. After the tryout is complete parent(s) will receive the proper registration form to complete and turn it in to the front desk.

Our swim lesson program begins with Saturday morning lessons on April 14th from 10am-1pm. Our weekday afternoon class session starts on Monday, April 23rd from 4-6:30pm. Our swim school staff will be available to assist you in your lesson registration Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:30-6:30pm.

Summer brings on our junior lifeguard program, morning and afternoon swim lessons, summer camp visits and summer events. This year our Dive-In Movies will feature Paddington 2 on Friday, June 22nd and Coco on Friday, July 20th from 6-10pm. Movie tickets are $1 each and available for purchase at the front desk starting Friday, June 1st. The 4th of July Splash party will be held Wednesday, July 4th from 12noon-5:30pm. Music, entertainment, games/prizes and a BBQ poolside is a great way to celebrate the 4th. To close out the summer, we will be hosting the Back to School pool party on Friday, August 10th from 4-8pm with free family swim, music, games and prizes.

Please join us for another fun and safe spring and summer season. For more information on programming, events and pool rules please see our recreation brochure, pool schedules or aquatic staff members.

See you soon and don't forget the sunblock!

The 2018 $25,000.00 USTA Men's Pro Tennis
Championships of Calabasas
Held over the weeks of March 17 - 25, world class, ATP tennis returned to Calabasas. A couple of rain days in the middle of the tournament forced extra courts and multiple matches on Friday and Saturday for the pros, but we caught up by Sunday's final matches. SoCal player, JC Aragone defeated 2014 champion, Marcos Giron from Thousand Oaks to take the Singles Championship. Sweden's Andre Goransson & Florian Lakat from France defeated Bernardo Saraiva of Portugal & the Netherlands' Sam Verbeek in the Doubles final.
Over the years Calabasas has hosted some of the best players in the world, Grand Slam champions, Olympic gold, silver & bronze medalists, Davis Cup players, in fact over the past few seasons, many of the US Davis Cup players have played the Calabasas Pro Championships. 2012 Champion, Tennys Sandgren reached the 2018 Australian Open quarterfinals. Past players, Kevin Anderson reached the 2018 US Open finals and Sam Querrey, got to the 2018 Wimbledon semifinals.
Two Rio Olympic medalists have played our tournament! Past champions and competitors include Mark Philippoussis, Michael Chang, John Isner, Ivo Karlovich, Mike & Bob Brian, Nicolas Massu, Steve Johnson, Rajeev Ram, Francis Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Donald Young and many others. This year was no different. Look for some of these players on TV later this year.
In attendance at the finals was the mayor of Calabasas, Fred Gaines and mayor pro tem, David Shapiro. Thank you to all of our Sponsors, and the City of Calabasas for supporting the tournament again this year.
Junior Level 7 Tournaments
What are Level 7's? These one day USTA sanctioned junior tournaments are designed for our youngest and/or less experienced juniors. From 6 to 18 years, boys and girls, these novice events give kids a chance to compete at a beginning or age group entry level. The USTA requires children under 10 years old to begin their competitive development with the lightest low compression "Orange Ball" and smaller courts. From there, they move on to the next level, "Green Ball" play. Once they've turned 11, it's on to the regulation "Yellow Ball" division. These Level 7's are the first step in getting your child into the arena of competitive junior tennis. If your child is ready for tournament play and is under 10, let these home court Level 7's be their first competitive experience. Three Level 7's are scheduled for the Spring/Summer, April 21, May 19, and June 30. Contact Tsetso Kostadinov for more details.
