Dear Stanwich Families,
The last week of school before Spring Break gave new meaning to March Madness with two Nor'easters and related power problems. The four lost class days that week, along with
a lost day in January, are excessive and necessitate some unfortunate calendar adjustments.
In the last few days we have considered our best options to make up the lost class time. Fortunately in this year's calendar, we had added a couple of additional days in June for the Upper School. In weighing our options, we considered how best to increase academic class time without compromising the important time set aside for professional development and teacher planning. We considered postponing Lower School Closing Ceremonies until the following week; however, Lower School teachers will need that time to plan curriculum adjustments and arrange classrooms for the consolidation transition year.
Consequently, the resulting plan extends some half day Fridays to full days and reduces the extended Easter weekend by one day, with a full day of classes on the Monday after Easter. Although the plan does not restore all this year's lost class time, the result will be more typical of an average academic year.
We recognize that some families may have made arrangements that may impede student attendance on Monday, April 2 or the Friday afternoons. Should students be unable to attend school because of previous plans, parents should so inform the appropriate division office. Students who are unable to attend school on April 2 and inform their division head, will receive an excused absence for the day.
Please note on your calendars that we will:
- Hold parent/teacher conferences from 3:00 - 8:00pm on Thursday, March 29,
- Run full class days on Friday, 4/6, 4/20, 5/4 and 5/18 with dismissal as follows: 2:45pm Wildwood, 2:50pm Upper School, 3:00pm Grades 1-5,
- Continue to recognize Good Friday, but school will be in session on Monday, April 2.
Those who have already registered for SAA or Prime Time on
4/6, 4/20, 5/4 and 5/18, will be reimbursed accordingly.
In the meantime, I hope that everyone can smell spring in the air and has a restorative break.
