WHERE TO NEXT?

Dear Traveler,

Last week as I sent the newsletter I had just arrived in Buenos Aires and immediately hopped on a plane to Bariloche in northern Patagonia.

It was an incredible trip. If you follow Truvay Travel on instagram you will get a glimpse into the places I go each day when I travel.

Although there is so much I want to share with you about the last week, I've been going quite non-stop, so today's newsletter will be on the brief side.

Bariloche and the surrounding areas are beautiful! The photo above is from a hike we did in Valle Encantado. It is one of so many options in the region. Afterwards we enjoyed a traditional Argentinian BBQ at an Estancia. The water level is quite low at this time of year (their autumn), but in summer season there is also the option to raft here and then do this hike. And another option to arrive by mountain bike. See a few more photos below.

Bariloche is a dream destination for active travelers! There are so many outdoor adventures - fishing, golf, kayaking, mountain biking, white water rafting, horseback riding and hut to hut hiking. There is a wide variety of accommodations around the area and they are all quite different. I stayed at Llao Llao and Las Balsas and did site visits at Villa Beluno, Correntoso and Aldebarán. Deciding which of these (or another one) is ideal for you will depend on your priorities and which activities you want to do.

Everywhere we went there were spectacular views!

Argentina has so many regions to explore, here is a list of what I consider the most popular ones you may want to visit...

Buenos Aires

Bariloche

Mendoza

Iguazu Falls

Salta

Cordoba

El Calafate

El Chaltén

Ushuaia

This week has been non-stop conference meetings and events. In addition to Argentina, I've been meeting with partners and hoteliers from Uruguay, Peru, Costa Rica, Chile, Panama, Belize, Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia and Ecuador. A veritable mezcla of South and Central America.

When I met with the Director of Tourism for Bariloche, I peppered him with questions about his favorite local gems to add to my map. I have lots of delicious spots for you! I'll share a couple in future highlights.

The variety of accommodations available in Argentina alone, include estancias, boutique hotels, luxury hotels, eco lodges, remote fishing lodges, wineries, igloo-type domes, luxury tented camps, golf resorts and refugios. There is truly something for everyone.

Below we'll go beyond South America, and you'll see articles on Malta, Sri Lanka, Antarctica, AFAR's 14 Epic Trips That Will Change Your Life and and an article on how travel affects mental health.

Jessie has also been enjoying beautiful views in Colombia, and you can read more about that below too.

Enjoy your week!

CHAIRLIFT UP CAMPANARIO HILL

Patagonia is full of spectacular views. Some take a lot of effort to get to (steep 4+ hour hikes uphill), others may involve ladders or walking on narrow ridges. And some are so easy.

In Bariloche, in northern Patagonia you will find Campanaria Hill. It's ideal because you can choose to hike up about 30 minutes or simply hop on the chairlift.

Normally I'd be hiking up, but in this case we were going as a group and we took the chairlift. But if you do the hike, reaching the summit feels a bit sweeter. And like some of my other favorite hikes - Alyeska in Alaska, Mt. Srd in Dubrovnik and Table Mountain in Cape Town - that also have cable car options, doing the hike, then enjoying something refreshing at the mountain top cafe is my favorite way to go.

But however you get up there, the view is the same!

Our guide, Fede, and I on our way down.

🌟 Our clients recently enjoyed a great reason to travel - they visited their son studying abroad in Copenhagen.  Their days were full of fun - exploring the boutiques, taking a tasting tour, visiting Tivoli Gardens, touring the city with a bike-chef and enjoying happy hour cocktails at outdoor hot tubs overlooking the city.

They stayed at the Nimb hotel.

Why is Nimb so special?

  • It’s located in the magical Tivoli Gardens park in the heart of Copenhagen.
  • A luxurious boutique hotel decorated in Scandinavian design and Moorish art and antiques. Most suites have fireplaces and balconies overlooking Tivoli Gardens.
  • The Nimb Roof is a destination. The rooftop pool has a built-in tide, plenty of lounge space, full bar and views of the city of Copenhagen and Tivoli Gardens.
  • They have delicious dining options. Enjoy French cuisine at Nimb Brasserie, Danish open-faced sandwiches at Fru Nimb, cocktails and bubbles at Nimb Bar and summer drinks at Nimb Roof. And don’t miss Cakenhagen where you’ll find freshly made cream cakes, pastries and petits fours.

Do as much or as little as you like:

  • Staying on a Friday or Saturday? Head outside to the open-air stage for the nightly rock concerts. Fru Nimb and Nimb Brasserie have special concert menus on those nights.
  • Relax in the hammam and steam area, schedule a massage, facial or infra-red iDome session.
  • Spend a day or evening in Tivoli Gardens, the world’s second oldest amusement park. Beautiful flowers and gardens surround exciting rides and a variety of restaurants.  A spetacular firework, lighting and music show happens every Saturday night from June to October.

‼️ Don’t miss…the Grand Seafood Platter at Nimb Brasserie. The platter varies with the season, but can include lobster, mussels, shrimp, oysters, langoustine, crab, Icelandic salmon, ceviche and more.

Use your credit from booking with Truvay Travel for Gillardeau oysters with lemon and shallot vinaigrette at Nimb Brasserie or enjoy a glass of Rosé watching the sun set at Nimb Roof.

(For those new to the newsletter, Jessie is our 19 year old daughter on a gap year. She spent the fall exploring Europe and is now adventuring around South America)

Jessie spent time in both Cali and Medellín this week. For one adventure, she went to a place where I've sent clients before - Guatapé. They went to there to hike Piedra del Peñol and see the spectacular views from above. Also called El Peñol, it is a natural rock formation that juts up from the earth and overlooks relatively flat lands and a reservoir. You will note below the steps required to climb to the top. As I mentioned above, I love a hike with good views. In this case it's more of a stairclimb, but very much worth it!

A few pictures from Cali...
