A Note from the CDI Grant Monitor:
Richard Gifford
California Department of Education
“The California Dyslexia Initiative (CDI) is demonstrating the power of collaboration as the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE), UCSF Dyslexia Center, California Department of Education (CDE), State Board of Education (SBE), and the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE) work together to support the needs of students with dyslexia and all struggling readers. The project is leveraging SCOE’s extensive experience developing and delivering literacy-related professional learning and UCSF Dyslexia Center’s deep research-based expertise in the neurobiology of dyslexia to provide a wealth of resources to the field. It is particularly exciting that the CDI is addressing so many aspects of literacy development, from best first instruction through the comprehensive Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS), training made available to every county office of education in the state, to the development of UCSF’s dyslexia screener, to the production of an expert webinar series that is providing guidance on critical topics, such as effective support for multilingual learners.”

Chapter 9: Screening and Assessment for Dyslexia
|
|
Want to learn more about screening and assessment for dyslexia? Check out Chapter 9 of the California Dyslexia Guidelines to learn about the importance of early identification and intervention using a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) for students at risk for, or with, dyslexia.
Explore Tables 9.1 and 9.2 for screening and assessment by skill area!
“Dyslexia can have a range of severity and may look different at various stages of life and education. For this reason, some people are not identified as having dyslexia until they are teenagers or adults, and some are never identified. When screening for or attempting to identify individuals with dyslexia, it is important to look at multiple symptoms and indicators as opposed to only a single symptom or indicator.”
