Board of Directors Chair Welcome
Hello CA FBLA!

As the Chair of the California FBLA Board of Directors, it falls upon me to welcome everyone back from what is usually an exciting summer that was “all-too-short.” That is not necessarily the case in 2020 as most of you have been sitting at home waiting since mid-March. I want to assure you all that while some aspects of our lives have come to a screeching halt, business still carries on. The hardworking teachers, advisers, directors, and coordinators at CA FBLA have worked diligently for the past five months to continue to bring you the best quality experience that CA FBLA can offer, even if remotely.

Although it was not as originally anticipated, the National Leadership Experience was still well attended by many CA FBLA members and advisers, and afforded many students the opportunity to compete at Nationals and show the rest of the country that CA FBLA stands proud under all circumstances.

Most of you are not heading back to the classroom right now, but that does not mean that CA FBLA is packing it in. Through the tireless and creative effort of the Management Team and the State Student Officer Team, many of the conferences and events are still being planned to offer you the best experience possible. Take the time the explore the CA FBLA website and check out the calendars to see what is already in store for this year.

The 2020-2021 National FBLA-PBL theme is “ASPIRE” and, in these unprecedented times, we need encouragement like this to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and strive to become something greater than we ever imagined. The CA FBLA Board of Directors is here to support all levels of membership and, as we cautiously step into the 2020-2021 academic year, the need for our members to “aspire” to succeed as leaders in business becomes even more important.

Thinking positive thoughts!

CDE News From Your State Adviser
Hello CA FBLA

Welcome to the start of the 2020-21 school year. I have fretted all summer about what I would say to you today. I had hoped to magically have answers to all of your concerns. Whether you are going back to school in a hybrid fashion, going 100% virtual, or still don’t really know what is happening, I think it is safe to say this isn’t what any of us want. This surely could be a trying year. HOWEVER, what hasn’t changed is that you are in an amazing position to change the life of students. Your attitude, your thoughts, your approach to the situation will make all the difference in the world.

“Stand up STRAIGHT and realize who YOU are, that you tower over your circumstances.”
~Maya Angelou

What I can offer you are resources, support, and promise. Resources for free online educational projects, units, lessons. My support – please e-mail me your name and contact information if you are not receiving my industry sector communications. I will be reaching out to all of you to provide an opportunity to connect – picking up where we left off in June. And my promise – that CA FBLA is in the midst of transitioning to serving you in the best way possible.

CA FBLA affiliation opens today, Friday, August 7. Please be sure to complete the affiliation form 2020-21 CA FBLA Affiliation located on our web site under RESOURCES - ADVISER/TEACHER RESOURCES. Once received and approved, you will receive an email confirmation from me. An approved affiliation is needed before participating in any FBLA activities. Thank you for your prompt attention to this detail.

Your CA FBLA Staff, Board of Directors, and Management Team are all working hard to provide you with top-notch leadership experiences for YOU and your students given a virtual platform. Look for details to come shortly from Melanie Dias, our Program & Events Manager, in regard to a FIRST EVER Advisers’ Conference. Among many things, you will be introduced to TEACH FBLA which is a dedicated, on-demand technical assistance website. Teach FBLA will provide you with 24/7 access to chapter development support materials. The site will be password protected, allowing our organization access to resources provided by National FBLA while also securely adding our own resources with exclusive privileges to our advisers.

In addition, we are adding a CA FBLA Chapter Support Center where new chapter inquiries and developing chapters can be serviced and supported. The services will range from quick requests for information to more complex situations involving student eligibility, working with partners, and preparing for competitive events.
I wish you the best as you beging the new school year!

Respectfully,

Molly Anderson

Updates From Your Program & Events Manager
Hello Advisers,

Welcome back to school! That sure has a different meaning and interpretation this year. As it's a challenging time for educators, we want you to know that CA FBLA is committed to supporting you this year more than ever! There are so many questions that our team is asking ourselves in order to prepare for a virtual year like: "How can we retain and engage members during a virtual year? How will chapters recruit new members? How can we provide Advisers with the tools they need to do all of the above?" Collectively, as a team, we are prioritizing to provide the best quality programs and service possible to our Advisers and members. We are excited to partner with Tri Leadership to host virtually CA FBLA's first Advisers' Conference in October, which will include breakouts to support advisers at any stage (new or "seasoned" or in between), and the trainings will be followed by a year of direct phone and email support for newer advisers, as well as access for all advisers to Tri's TeachFBLA web portal resources! Stay tuned for more information on our Advisers' Conference!

You may be wondering how CA FBLA will handle conferences this year. Our team is gearing up as we are planning to move forward with the all fall and winter events virtually. This includes OAT Day, LDI, and Section Conferences. Dates for these events have been set and can be found on our website under the calendar or at the link below. OAT Day information will be posted soon to section pages. SLC is to be determined as we have contracts in place that need to be ironed out.

CA FBLA is proud to say that over 200 members participated and represented California at the National Leadership Experience this summer! Congratulations to all participants in competitive events, recognition awards, and attending leadership workshops on a job well done!  CA FBLA NLE 2020 Top Finishers Results are available here.
New this year, our State Executive Board Officers will be hosting monthly business webinars that will give members an insight to a variety of different career paths. This months' webinar featured Bella Weems-Lambert, Co-founder of Origami Owl, a very successful direct marketing jewelry business. Next month, Kelsea Whiting, CA FBLA State President, will highlight upcoming events and the 2020-2021 State Projects for you and your members in our newsletter. Stay connected on CA FBLA's Facebook and Instagram pages for news from our State Executive Board Officers.

I "aspire" to working with you all this year!

Kindest Regards,

Melanie Dias
CA FBLA Program & Events Manager
Calendar
The CA FBLA Management Team has set the dates for our major fall and winter events to be virtual--the section Officer Adviser Training (OAT) Days, Leadership Development Institute (LDI) on November 14, and Section Conferences on February 6. As there are restrictions in place by many districts for student/teacher travel this academic year, State Leadership Conference (SLC) is still to be determined as to whether or not it will be in person or virtual. The 2021 SLC is scheduled for April 22-25 in Sacramento, and the 2021 NLC is scheduled for June 28 - July 2 in Anaheim.

Financial Literacy Grant Program
Grant Submissions Extended to November 30!
Bite of Reality and NGPF Now Offering Virtual Options!!!
The Cy-Pres Financial Literacy Grant program was originally set to wind up on March 31, 2020, and all awards and recognitions were set to occur at the SLC. In order to make adjustments in light of the current health crisis, any grant sub-programs with March 31, 2020, deadlines have had their deadlines extended until November 30, 2020.

Basically, all parts of the program remain available for both new applications and for submission of final documentation for reimbursements and awards EXCEPT for two programs that are already completed: the Section Directors grant sub-program and the student video contest (already awarded--congrats to the team from Los Osos HS).

Advisers with previously approved grant applications received their reimbursements and cash stipends (in lieu of gift cards) during May/June provided their documentation was received by March 31. All other reimbursements and stipends will be provided within six weeks of documentation submissions. If you need to review the guidelines in order to make a new application, here is a link to the Cy-Pres Financial Literacy Grant page on our web site. Links to the applications forms and/or other instructions necessary appear under each sub-program description: https://www.cafbla.org/Page/2348

If you have any questions about the Cy-Pres Financial Literacy Grant Program, please contact Sue Christensen, Business Manager, at businessmanager@cafbla.org.
