December 2023 Updates

Welcome to the CMSF monthly newsletter! This December we are highlighting a new report on marine debris, an update on aerial surveys for whales conducted in the Santa Barbara Channel, and an internship opportunity!

Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Marine debris is a persistent and escalating global issue and presents environmental, social, and economic challenges, particularly in coastal regions. Recognizing the urgency of this problem, the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) and CMSF just released a comprehensive assessment of the types, sources, and spatial distribution of marine debris along the MBNMS shoreline.

Leveraging data from various community science programs, we provide a detailed analysis of the predominant categories of trash, their material composition, and the human activities contributing to their presence.

As you will read below, much of the work we do at CMSF ensures that this balance is achieved and both people and the planet remain resilient.

Master's Student Internship Opportunity

The greater Monterey Bay region’s waters and food webs are contaminated by ubiquitous microplastics (MPs) and macro-plastics that break apart into MPs. This intern will sample and analyze water from the four major rivers that enter the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Monitoring will include collecting water samples for microplastic analysis as well as collecting, documenting, and analyzing macro-plastic samples. Microplastics will be analyzed by the intern and members of the project team. Macro-plastics will be categorized by product and use, to assess whether the origin is agricultural, industrial or urban.

Plasticulture Team Presents to Congress

As you travel along the Central Coast of California, you will pass farms with seemingly endless rows of strawberries, showing only a glimpse of the full production scale. Over 40,000 acres of CA soil is dedicated to growing strawberries, it may be hard to imagine, but those 40,000 acres are covered in plastic mulch used to shield strawberry beds.
