Program Updates

April 19, 2023

Issue No. 11

Commemorating Fair Housing Month

April is Fair Housing Month, and this year commemorates the 55th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act. The Fair Housing Act protects people from discrimination when they are renting or buying a home, getting a mortgage, seeking housing assistance, or engaging in other housing-related activities.

Homeownership is vital to building generational wealth and creating a sustainable future for families. This month, we reaffirm our commitment to helping alleviate socioeconomic barriers in housing assistance and building an equitable future for homeowners in CA, especially those who have been hit hardest by the pandemic.

General Updates

Up to $80,000 in Grants to Cover Late Property Taxes Now Available to Eligible Homeowners

California Mortgage Relief Program Raises Cap on Property Tax Assistance

The California Mortgage Relief Program has raised the limit for assistance with delinquent property taxes from $20,000 to a maximum of $80,000 per household.

This update comes as many Californians continue to feel the financial hardships onset by the pandemic. By increasing the cap on property tax assistance, the program is continuing to act as a safety net for homeowners across the state. Even homeowners who missed the recent April 10 deadline for paying property taxes could be eligible for grants.

To receive additional assistance for property tax payments, homeowners must meet all other program requirements at the time of re-application.

Roeser states, "Many Californians are still feeling the impact of the financial hardships they endured throughout the pandemic. By increasing the cap on property tax assistance, the program is continuing to act as a safety net for homeowners. Those who believe they may now be eligible should re-apply."

About the California Mortgage Relief Program

While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions of Americans and created turmoil for homeowners, California received $1 billion in mortgage relief funds from the American Rescue Plan Act’s Homeowner Assistance Fund. Homeowners who have fallen behind on their housing payments due to pandemic-related financial hardship can use these funds to get caught up.

The California Mortgage Relief Program is being provided to homeowners through CalHFA Homeowner Relief Corporation in collaboration with the state’s Housing is Key initiative.
