Program Updates

July 19, 2023

Issue No. 14

General Updates

The California Mortgage Relief Program has recently adjusted its delinquency date requirement for past-due mortgage and property tax payments from March 1, 2023, to August 1, 2023. Homeowners who have missed at least 2 mortgage payments or 1 property tax payment by August 1, 2023, and are currently behind, may qualify for assistance up to $80,000.

Applicants who were previously declined due to not missing payments by the prior delinquency date may now be eligible for the program with this change.

As each homeowner’s situation is unique, we encourage homeowners to visit the website at CaMortgageRelief.org for eligibility criteria, more details on the program requirements, and additional information about how to apply.

If you have questions or would like to speak with a team member, please call the Contact Center at (888) 840-2594 during the hours of 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. PT, Monday - Friday.

Reminder: Up to $80,000 in Assistance Available for

Partial Claims & Loan Deferrals

While many homeowners took action during the pandemic to restructure their mortgages in order to save their homes, they now face large payments at the end of their mortgage.

The California Mortgage Relief Program is offering a maximum of $80,000 per household to help reduce or eliminate partial claims or loan deferrals taken during or after January 2020, which will also increase home equity. There is no fee to apply and the funds do not need to be paid back to this state program.

All homeowners must meet the following eligibility requirements:

In Case You Missed It

With the release of the 2023 income limits by state and county for the Homeowner Assistance Fund by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, applicants previously denied California Mortgage Relief Program funding may now qualify.

To qualify for assistance from the California Mortgage Relief Program, an applicant's combined household income for residents 18 and over must be at or below 150% of their Area Median Income (AMI). Applicants can check their current AMI on the homepage of the program's website here and see if they are now eligible due to the changes.

About the California Mortgage Relief Program

While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions of Americans and created turmoil for homeowners, California received relief funds from the American Rescue Plan Act’s Homeowner Assistance Fund. Homeowners who have fallen behind on their housing payments due to pandemic-related financial hardship can use these funds to get caught up.

The California Mortgage Relief Program is being provided to homeowners through CalHFA Homeowner Relief Corporation in collaboration with the state’s Housing is Key initiative.
