August 15, 2023

Issue No. 15

General Updates

Need help with delinquent housing payments? To date, the California Mortgage Relief Program has assisted more than 20,000 California households with an average of $25,000 in funding per homeowner to help save their homes.

Funded by the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act’s Homeowner Assistance Fund and operated by the CalHFA Homeowner Relief Corporation, the California Mortgage Relief Program is here to ease financial hardships resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Homeowners may be eligible for up to a maximum amount of $80,000 in total assistance per household.

If you are a homeowner in need of help with any of the following, this program may be able to help you:

  • Past-due mortgage payments
  • Missed property taxes
  • Partial claims and loan deferrals taken during or after January 2020
  • Reverse mortgage arrearages

Reminder: New Delinquency Date is August 1, 2023

The California Mortgage Relief Program announced earlier this month that it has adjusted its delinquency date requirement for past-due mortgage and property tax payments from March 1, 2023, to August 1, 2023. Homeowners who have missed at least 2 mortgage payments or 1 property tax payment by August 1, 2023, and are currently behind, may qualify for up to $80,000 in financial assistance.

Applicants who were previously declined because they did not meet the former delinquency date requirements may now be eligible for the program with this change.

As each homeowner’s situation is unique, we encourage homeowners to visit the website at CaMortgageRelief.org for eligibility criteria, more details on the program requirements, and additional information about how to apply.

If you have questions or would like to speak with a team member, please call the Contact Center at (888) 840-2594 during the hours of 8 AM – 6 PM PT, Monday - Friday.

About the California Mortgage Relief Program

While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions of Americans and created turmoil for homeowners, California received relief funds from the American Rescue Plan Act’s Homeowner Assistance Fund. Homeowners who have fallen behind on their housing payments due to pandemic-related financial hardship can use these funds to get caught up.

The California Mortgage Relief Program is being provided to homeowners through CalHFA Homeowner Relief Corporation in collaboration with the state’s Housing is Key initiative.
