Apply Now! California Mortgage Relief Program

Funds Are Running Low

The California Mortgage Relief Program’s one-time federal COVID-relief funds are running low and homeowners are encouraged to apply for assistance while funds are still available.

Funded through the federal American Rescue Plan Act, the California Mortgage Relief Program launched at the height of the global pandemic. Since late 2021, the California Mortgage Relief Program has helped low- and moderate-income homeowners from diverse backgrounds stay in their homes and preserve their home equity. 75% of all grants awarded went to households that were at or below the average Area Median Income (AMI) for the counties they live in, and over 50% of grants went to socially disadvantaged households.

The California Mortgage Relief Program has served as a model for similar programs across the country. More than 33,000 grants have been awarded to households throughout the state and our team is committed to providing assistance and information to homeowners for the duration of the program.

If you would like more information about the program or want to learn more about how to apply for assistance, please visit the The California Mortgage Relief Program website or call our Contact Center at (888) 840-2594 Monday through Friday between 8 AM - 6 PM PT.

Q&A: What Does Low Funds Mean For Me?

Below are a few common questions related to the low funds announcement. For additional questions, you may also go here.

Q. With the program at low funds status, can I still apply?

A. Homeowners are encouraged to still submit an application, but time is running out to apply for these one-time federal COVID-relief funds. Eligible applications will continue to receive assistance as long as funding is available. We encourage you to complete your applications as soon as possible and respond to any requests for additional information from our staff in a timely manner so that you have the best chance to have your applications reviewed before the program runs out of funds.

Q. Since the program is now in low funds status, how will I know when the program runs out of funds? Is there a deadline to apply?

A. If you have started an application, you will be contacted by email if the program exhausts all funds before a decision is made on your application. There is not a deadline

to apply but homeowners should act quickly before the remaining funds are awarded. The California Mortgage Relief Program will also make information about the program closure publicly available and will share alternative resources for assistance on housing costs once all program funds have been exhausted.

Q. How long before I know whether or not my application is approved or denied? Should I be pursuing other forms of housing assistance while I wait to hear back?

A. The California Mortgage Relief Program is committed to helping homeowners as quickly as possible. Depending on the availability of funds, there is no guarantee that all eligible applications will be funded, but we will contact homeowners as soon as possible once there is a change in their application status. We encourage homeowners to continue to pursue all options to preserve their homeownership.

Reminder: Housing, Legal Resources Available For Help

The California Mortgage Relief Program has an entire web page dedicated to sharing various resources that may be helpful for you or someone you know.

From legal assistance to utilities and other housing assistance from the California Community Action Partnership Association (CalCAPA) partners and others, there are many resources beyond the California Mortgage Relief Program available to assist Californians in need.

About the California Mortgage Relief Program

While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions of Americans and created turmoil for homeowners, California received relief funds from the American Rescue Plan Act’s Homeowner Assistance Fund. Homeowners who have fallen behind on their housing payments due to pandemic-related financial hardship can use these funds to get caught up.

The California Mortgage Relief Program is being provided to homeowners through the CalHFA Homeowner Relief Corporation.
