More Homeowners Eligible for Assistance with Housing Costs as California Mortgage Relief Program Expands

After successfully providing grants to more than 10,000 eligible households statewide, the California Mortgage Relief Program is expanding to provide additional assistance and expand eligibility to help even more homeowners who have struggled with housing payments due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is new with the Program?

  • Assistance to reduce or eliminate COVID-related partial claim second mortgages and loan deferrals that homeowners received during or after January 2020.
  • Delinquency dates for households seeking assistance for past-due mortgage payments or unpaid property tax payments have been reset.
  • Homeowners who missed at least two mortgage payments or at least one property tax payment before March 1, 2023, may now be eligible.
  • Eligible homeowners may receive assistance on properties with up to four units, including houses, condos, permanently affixed manufactured homes, ADUs, duplexes, triplexes or fourplexes.
  • Additional funding available to homeowners who previously received funding, up to a maximum of $80,000 per household, if they meet all other program requirements at the time of re-application. The grants can cover multiple areas of need from past-due mortgage payments to property taxes, partial claim second mortgages and loan deferrals.

About the California Mortgage Relief Program

While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions of Americans and created turmoil for homeowners, California received $1 billion in mortgage relief funds from the American Rescue Plan Act’s Homeowner Assistance Fund. Homeowners who have fallen behind on their mortgage payments due to pandemic-related financial hardship can use these funds to get caught up.

The California Mortgage Relief Program is being provided to homeowners through CalHFA Homeowner Relief Corporation in collaboration with the state’s Housing is Key initiative.
