Assemblyman Vince Fong to headline CalAPA Annual Dinner Jan. 12 in Los Angeles

Registration is now open for the 2023 CalAPA Annual Dinner & Awards, which is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 12 in Los Angeles. Details and on-line registration can be found HERE.

Assemblyman Vince Fong, R-Bakersfield, will be the keynote speaker for the event. Fong, who is well-known to CalAPA members and the asphalt pavement industry in California, is vice chairman of the Assembly Transportation Committee as well as vice chairman of the Assembly Budget Committee that oversees transportation spending. He is also a member of the powerful Assembly Appropriations Committee. In addition to providing insight into current happenings at the State Capitol in Sacramento and SB1, the $50 billion Road Repair & Accountability Act of 2017, Fong will also share his perspective on national politics. Prior to being elected to the Legislature, he worked as district director to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-CA. Fong's official biography is HERE.

The gala dinner and awards ceremony will include an installation of the CalAPA Board of Directors and Officers for 2023, and other special recognitions. The event will take place at an opulent new venue, the Hotel InterContinental, 900 Wilshire Blvd., in downtown Los Angeles. Seating for this exclusive member-only event is limited, so early registration is strongly advised. A special announcement on how to obtain discounted lodging at the Hotel InterContinental will be made next week.

The CalAPA Annual Dinner & Awards are one of the premier events of the year for the asphalt pavement industry in California. Previous Annual Dinner speakers have included Lt. gov. Gavin Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and, last year, State Treasurer Fiona Ma.

Call for presentations: Spring Asphalt Pavement Conference & Equipment Expo March 23-34 in Ontario
The Spring Asphalt Pavement Conference & Equipment Expo returns to Southern California March 23-24 at the Doubletree Hotel Ontario Airport in Ontario. The popular event, now in its 10th year, is the premier opportunity for industry and agency personnel to learn the latest about asphalt pavement standards, technology, regulatory matters, funding projections and other topics.

The conference will feature general sessions and breakout sessions so attendees can customize their conference experience. Also back will be the trade show floor and equipment expo area where attendees can get an up-close view of the latest equipment and technology.

The event planning committee welcomes recommendations for conference presentation topics and speakers. Questions should be directed to CalAPA Technical Director Brandon Milar at (916) 791-5044.

In conjunction with this year's conference, a special networking event will be held on March 22 in at the recently opened Topgolf Sports & Entertainment Complex in Ontario. Details on that event will be announced later. The Topgolf event held last month in Roseville in conjunction with the Fall Asphalt Pavement Conference was attended by more than 60 people.

Free webinar on perpetual pavements to be held Nov. 21 on-line

The Asphalt Pavement Alliance, a CalAPA partner, is hosting a free educational webinar on Nov. 21 titled, "Perpetual Pavements: the Road to Long Lasting Pavement."

The 90-minute webinar will feature an All-Star panel of experts: Kyler Carlson, Washington State DOT; John Senger, Illinois DOT; Praveen Desaraju, Maryland State Highway Administration, Kevin Burke, Illinois Asphalt Pavement Association, Karen Carlie, Washington State DOT, Marshall Klinefelter, Maryland Asphalt Association, and Dave Gent, Washington Asphalt Pavement Association.

The webinar will delve into the latest research and best practices that are demonstrating the long-term value provided by the perpetual pavement design strategy. The webinar will spotlight three different award-winning projects.

Professional engineers (PEs) who register and attend the entire webinar as an individual will be awarded up to 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs).

The webinar will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. PST. Although attendance is free, advanced registration must be completed on-line in advance HERE.
CalAPA spreads the word about sustainable asphalt at annual 'Greenbuild' event in San Francisco
Asphalt was well represented at the 2022 Greenbuild International Conference & Expo held Nov. 1-3 in San Francisco.

CalAPA's Technical Director, Brandon Milar, joined Joseph Shacat, Director of Sustainable Pavements with the National Asphalt Pavement Association, to answer questions from the more than 1,000 attendees, including architects, consultants, sustainability managers, designers, engineers, educators, agency personnel and others.

The asphalt booth was paid for by the Asphalt Pavement Alliance, a marketing arm of the industry that is supported by CalAPA. Asphalt is the world's No. 1 recycled product, and it has many other sustainable attributes that make it popular with engineers and others who have influence on pavement-type selection. Member news: Prism Worldwide acquires CRC Polymer Systems
Prism Worldwide announced last week that it has acquired CRC Polymer Systems, a custom compounding company supplying compounds, resins and colors to the plastics industry.

By purchasing CRC, Prism will increase its capacity for product development, blending and distribution through North America. the introduction of Prism's polymers into CRC;s existing proprietary compounds will produce new sustainable product options, the company said in an announcement.

Prism Worldwide utilizes patented chemistry and technology to produce novel thermoplactic elastomers derived from ground tire rubber and that can be used in a number of products, including as an asphalt modifier. To read the company announcement, click HERE.

REFLECTION CRACKING: Cracking that appears on the surface of a pavement above joints and cracks in the underlying pavement layer due to horizontal and vertical movement at these joints and cracks.

CALL BEFORE YOU DIG: Call 8-1-1 prior to construction when plans call for any type of excavation so that the location of underground utilities can be verified and marked. More information on the 8-1-1 program in California can be found HERE.
