The School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) and the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) seek applicants for the leadership role of the Director of the UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program (JMP). The JMP is a 5-year integrated dual degree program in graduate research and medical education. Students spend their first 2.5 years at UC Berkeley, completing course and thesis requirements for a MS degree in Health and Medical Sciences under the auspices of the School of Public Health, along with the pre-clerkship phase of their MD degree under the direction of the UCSF School of Medicine. After completing their MS degree, the students transfer to the UCSF campus where they complete the clinical experiences needed to graduate with a MD degree.
This program is a unique partnership between two internationally recognized university campuses. Consistently ranked among the leading public health graduate schools in the United States, the UC Berkeley School of Public Health has a legacy of achievement in helping people live healthier lives in a safer world. Established scholars whose research has illuminated areas such as the intersection of medicine, public health, medical education, social epidemiology, disparities and health will be considered. The UCSF School of Medicine is the only medical school to be ranked in the top 10 of U.S. News & World Report for both primary care and research. With a mission to Advance Health Worldwide, UCSF has a legacy of using science, care delivery, education and policy to address the nation’s most complex challenges in health, healthcare and biomedical science. Ground-breaking work on issues ranging from the molecular mechanisms of pain to the social solutions to homelessness to equity in health professions education are part of the daily work of the UCSF community.
This leadership role is available to applicants at the Associate or Full Professor level in the title series of Professor in Residence, Professor of Clinical X, or Health Sciences Clinical Professor. It is expected that the Director will devote the majority of their professional effort to this role. The UC Berkeley School of Public Health and UCSF School of Medicine seek candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education. We are seeking candidates with strong administrative and collaborative skills, in addition to intellectual leadership and vision. A joint faculty appointment at the UCSF School of Medicine will be established, as needed, to enable the Director to assume responsibility for this regional campus of the UCSF School of Medicine.
The Director is expected to oversee and provide leadership in the following areas: accreditation compliance; student advising and mentoring; curricular design, implementation and evaluation; student assessment; junior faculty mentoring and development; admissions processes; and financial development. The Director is expected to be knowledgeable about medical education accreditation requirements and to have a full understanding of and commitment to supporting the UCSF School of Medicine curriculum, educational philosophy, and student graduation milestones, so as to ensure that JMP students have an equivalent medical education experience to their counterparts at the main UCSF program. Regular communication with the UCSF School of Medicine medical education leadership and participation in specific committees is required. The Director is expected to teach at least three courses per year (e.g., in the problem-based learning medical education curriculum and Master’s research seminar).
