Call for Submissions to Our First Special Issue
Fall 2017 Issue 21 of Fifth Wednesday Journal

Fifth Wednesday Journal announces a call for submissions to an Immigrant/Diaspora issue in the fall of 2017. We intend to showcase writing by authors who are immigrants or children of immigrants from Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries.*

We are looking for literature from a sort of Diaspora of excellent writers from MENA countries. This is not a "themed" issue. Literature is, in our view, the best way to demonstrate the essential nature of humanity because literature examines and tells stories about all those commonalities across individual cultures. Every language contains abstract expressions for all the human emotions and behaviors regardless of geography, ethnicity, religion, cultural history, or wealth. These are the building blocks of literature.
The United States is home to immigrants from almost every country and territory in the world. In fact, much of the great strength of this country is drawn from the energy, intellect, and creativity of immigrants and their descendents. Literature is the bridge by which we share good and bad experiences, hopes, fears, dreams, successes, and failures, of a diverse population in a free and peaceful country.

We are asking you to send us your poems and stories. Help us make this issue truly representative of the literary soul of people of the MENA Diaspora.
If you prefer to send us your work via attachment to an email, do so, be sure to include in the subject line "Immigration Issue." Please use editors@fifthwednesdyjournal.org.
If you send your work via Submittable, please put the words "Immigration Issue" in your cover note.
Our normal deadline for a fall issue is July 1 st but we can extend it when requested.  We will be more than happy to respond to any questions or requests for more information. Just send us an email.

* There is no standardized definition of the MENA countries. However, the following countries are often included: Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia,  Somalia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
