PresLetter from the President
Pictured: Monica Champ, Shelley Holmes, and Ashli Sims at ICON 2019

I have just returned from AFP ICON in San Antonio and had an amazing time networking with fundraising colleagues and attending educational sessions. I had the chance to see Armando Zumaya, our NPD speaker last year, and he is doing well! He had a great session, "Fundraising from the Whole Community: Diversity As a Powerful Fundraising Strategy" that I attended. Armando made several good points worth sharing:

  • Does your board of directors reflect the diversity of our community? Or, the clients you serve?
  • It all starts with a board that can create genuine relationships that grow diversity of your donor base
  • It should go without saying, but, don't make assumptions about someone's wealth or lack thereof
  • Diversity must be part of your organization's strategic plan and tied to a measurable outcome

Other sessions I attended dealt with subjects like "Fundraising and Social Media During a Tragedy", capital campaigns, major gifts, and "The Risk of Under Investing in Fundraising". They were all very, very good!! If you have the opportunity to attend next year's AFP ICON, I would highly recommend it!

Then, Soledad O'Brien wrapped up the closing session telling her story and about her Foundation, PowHERful, that helps women complete their college degree. Wow!!

Ashli Sims and Shelley Holmes attended the conference too - hoping to secure a fabulous speaker for our NPD Conference in November. Watch for dates and details soon!
