CALL FOR NOMINATIONS TO JOIN CUGH'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS
(March 2021 - March 2024)

CUGH is seeking nominations from our membership to fill five positions on our Board of Directors. The terms are three-years in duration and will start March 14th, 2021. The nominee should not be from an institution currently represented on CUGH's Board. If you wish to nominate yourself or an individual who meets the criteria below please do the following:

  1. The nominee should submit a brief statement (under 300 words) summarizing why you would like to join the Board and what you wish to contribute to achieve CUGH's mission. Please reference the desired criteria that we are seeking below. The statement must include that the nominee's institution is a CUGH member and will maintain its membership during their 3-year term.
  2. If you are nominating someone else, please write a brief (under 300 words) statement on how the nominee's skill set will contribute to CUGH's mission. Again, please reference the skills we are seeking below. If someone is not nominating you, please send one letter of support (under 300 words) from a person at your institution referencing the skills we are seeking as stated below to support your candidacy.
  3. Send your nominations to the CUGH Secretariat at [email protected] by October 30th, 2020.



Voting Process:

  1. Nominations received will be sent to the CUGH Nominations & Awards Committee by November 15th, 2020.
  2. The CUGH Nominations & Awards Committee will vote, by November 30th, 2020. The top 15 candidates from this vote will then go to the CUGH Board of Directors to confirm that the final slate of candidates reflect diversity across a range of professional medical and non-medical disciplines, institutions, race, gender, and geography, including members from LMICs.
  3. A slate of 15 candidates will be sent to CUGH's member leads to vote for their top 5 candidates by January 5th, 2021. Voting ends January 21st, 2021.
  4. The final slate of the top 5 candidates based on the votes received from CUGH’s institutional member leads will be confirmed by the CUGH Nominations & Awards Committee by January 22nd, 2021.
  5. Results will be shared with CUGH's Board of Directors for final ratification on January 26th, 2021.
  6. Invitations will be sent to those selected on or before January 31st, 2021.
  7. New members will be announced during CUGH's annual conference, March 12-14th 2021 (virtual).

Criteria:

  1. Nominees will be working in global health or in a related field at an institution that is a dues-paying CUGH member in good standing.
  2. The expertise we are seeking includes, but is not limited to: governance, fundraising, financial management, strategic planning, project management, possessing strong personal connections to foundations, other funders, INGOs, academic and other related associations and governments. Effective leadership qualities, with demonstrated success in building a global health department, program, or initiative are desirable.
  3. Nominees should be willing to commit to a three-year term, be involved in and participate in regular monthly board calls, attend the CUGH annual meetings, and additional meetings by telephone as needed, and serve on one or more board committees. Nominees should expect to spend up to 2 hours per week on CUGH board activities.
  4. Nominees should add to the diversity of the current board. We welcome applicants from a broad range of professional biomedical and non-biomedical disciplines, race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and/or geographic location including being from a low or middle-income country.
  5. While only one representative from each institution can be on the CUGH Board of Directors at any given time, multiple individuals from the same institution may be nominated.

Responsibilities of CUGH Board Members:

  • Actively participate in the CUGH mission and purpose, and enhance positive working relationships with individual and institutional members: http://www.cugh.org/about
  • Contribute to the shaping, approving, monitoring, and implementation of the organization’s activities. Provide guidance consistent with one's skills on financial management, strategic planning, governance and fundraising.
  • Assess and improve the Board’s effectiveness.
  • Help guide and implement the organization’s objectives, plans, and actions to maximize its capabilities and maintain financial security. Identify and connect CUGH to new funding opportunities.
  • Promote the organization and its activities across your institution and across the globe.
  • Promote the organization publicly and provide the Executive Director opportunities for the organization to be represented at events, conferences, etc.
  • Provide the Executive Director and other board members with knowledge about partnerships with other organizations and important contacts and potential resources that can help in the growth of the organization.
  • Maintain confidentiality about the board’s meetings, financial related issues and subject matters discussed.
  • Provide oversight of disclosure and transparency, risk assessment, internal controls and processes designed to promote the organization’s activities.
  • Provide advice and support to the Executive Director; participate in the Executive Director’s annual evaluation.
  • Actively participate in Board of Directors meetings and committees.
  • Suggest nominees to the Board of Directors.
  • Board members from High Income Countries are expected to make a contribution to CUGH’s annual fundraiser to support travel bursaries for LMIC researchers to present at CUGH’s conference.

Time obligation includes:

  • Attending monthly Board conference calls (approximately 60 minutes per call);
  • Participating on at least one Board committee; and
  • Attending the annual Board Retreat that coincides with the CUGH's annual Global Health Conference.
  • Nominees should expect to spend up to 2 hours per week on CUGH board activities.
