NEW IBERIA, La. -- Calling all artists! Please join the Shadows-on-the-Teche March 11-18, 2017 for the third annual Shadows-on-the-Teche Plein Air in honor of William Weeks Hall, artist and last private owner of the plantation home.
The phrase "plein air" describes art created in the open air, a process much different than producing canvases in the studio. Artists must deal with shifting shadows and changing light as well as adverse weather conditions.
This event is a juried competition with nationally celebrated plein air artist and teacher Erik Koeppel serving as judge for 2017.
To participate in the competition, interested artists must submit three samples of their paintings by Dec. 31, 2016. Application and details can be found at ShadowsOnTheTeche.org or by contacting the Shadows. The artists selected to participate in the competition will be required to start and complete two paintings between the March 11, 2017 registration and March 16 when their work must be turned in to be judged. Artists will be encouraged to set up their easels not only at the Shadows but along New Iberia's historic Main Street, Avery Island and other locations in Acadiana.
Shadows will host a "Paint Out" on Fri., March 17, which will be open to any and all interested artists. Students and artists of all ages are encouraged to come take part in this activity. Works produced at the "Paint Out" will be judged by Koeppel and exhibited at the Shadows Visitor Center, at 320 E. Main St. in New Iberia.
Any funds raised from this event will allow Shadows to offer annual art classes at the historic home in memory of Weeks Hall.
For more information, please contact Pat Kahle at (337) 519-3953 or Shadows@ShadowsOnTheTeche.org. Guidelines and applications are available for download at ShadowsOnTheTeche.org/Plein-Air-Competition
