THE SILVER MEDAL EXHIBITION
Juror: Jo Powers

The Scarab Club announces its Silver Medal Exhibition, an annual unthemed, all-media exhibition. Since 2015 the Silver Medal has been given in honor of the late Gilda Snowden. Gilda's husband, William Boswell, will present the medal at the reception for the exhibition on Friday, February 24th.

The purpose of the Silver Medal Exhibition is to recognize the diversity and achievement of artists whose work shows creativity of concept, excellence of design and expertise of media; to display these works to regional audiences and to be an educational opportunity for students.

The German word Stammtisch can be translated into English as "regular's table." It is an invitation to friends-to gather round a table and talk, philosophize, dream, rant, play cards. The regular's table is a symbol of community and conversation.

Curated by Stefany Anne Golberg in collaboration with Detroit Research, Salon De'troit, and the Scarab Club, the Regular's Table pairs Detroit artists, thinkers, and dabblers and asks them to talk to each other abo ut subjects close to their hearts. It is a conversation between strangers on the way to becoming friends.

MARSHA MUSIC is a self- described "primordial Detroiter." She is a former activist and labor leader, and has written acclaimed essays, poems and narratives about Detroit's music, and its past and its future. Marsha was awarded a 2012 Kresge Literary Arts Fellowship and is the creator of "Salon De'troit," a space for artists and thinkers to exchange ideas and explore topics relating to the Motor City

MORGAN MEIS has a PhD in Philosophy and is a founding member of Flux Factory, an arts collective in New York. He has written for The New Yorker, n+1, The Believer, Harper's Magazine, et al. He won the Whiting Award in 2013. Morgan is also an editor at 3 Quarks Daily, and teaches in the Fine Arts and Liberal Studies departments at the College for Creative Studies.

ROBERT WINTHROP CHANLER:
OUTRAGEOUS AMERICAN MODERNIST
Speaker: Betsy Fahlman, Professor of Art History at Arizona State University,
Adjunct Curator of American Art at the Phoenix Art Museum

When scholars began to reclaim the first generation American modernist artists from the first quarter of the twentieth century, they focused on those who had been to Europe and whose work aligned most closely with Cubism, Fauvism, Futurism, and their many variants.  But it is now recognized that many modernisms flourished in this country during this period and that our artists engaged a much broader range of aesthetic options. This talk considers Robert Winthrop Chanler, an Astor and an independent-and often outrageous-modernist who negotiated interconnected bohemian and elite cultural circles, making his artistic reputation with exotic and brilliantly colored lacquered screens whose compositions featured fantastical avian, jungle, and aquatic creatures.
