Welcome to the Georgetown Lombardi Arts & Humanities Program (AHP) newsletter. In this week's issue, we present two ways to become involved with our program. Become a volunteer with our National Endowment for the Arts funded music and healing research study, and/or submit poetry for this year's issue of Lombardi Voices.

Call for Research Participants

The Georgetown Lombardi Arts and Humanities Program and the Neurophysiology and Behavior Lab at Georgetown University are looking for research participants for their National Endowment for the Arts sponsored study asking: "How can music induce physiological healing processes?"

Participants will receive a $30 Starbucks gift card for one hour of their time.

Who are we looking for?

Healthy subjects, ages 18-75, willing to participate in a study of brain and physiological effects of music perception.

What will we do?

We will record your brain activity using EEG and physiological parameters with chest electrodes.

Where will it be?

The Research Building at Georgetown University.

Submit Your Poems Today for Lombardi Voices

Each year, the Arts and Humanities program publishes a collection of poems by our community of patients, providers, caregivers and friends titled, Lombardi Voices. (Click here or the image below to download a copy of last winter's issue.)

Submit your poems for publication in Lombardi Voices by emailing us at lombardiartsadmin@georgetown.edu.

October 1, 2023 is the deadline for submissions.

Below, writer-in-residence, Michelle Berberet, who teaches AHP's expressive writing classes, shares a poem that she hopes will be a source of inspiration.

Poets

by Michelle Berberet

Poets look,

take in every detail.

Poets sniff,

savour scents,

consider them.

Poets touch textures,

describe them.

Poets feel,

untangle emotions,

name them.

And then they record it all

for the rest of us

who would otherwise miss so much.

The Georgetown Lombardi Arts & Humanities Program (AHP) promotes a holistic approach to healthcare for patients, caregivers, physicians, nurses, staff members, and students through the use of music, dance, expressive writing, and visual arts. These therapeutic modalities are normally provided throughout the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., and online through Eventbrite courses. The AHP is a program of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
