Call for Scores
Create new music for a piano dropped from a helicopter!
50 years ago the Jack Straw Foundation, in the form of KRAB radio,
dropped an upright piano from a helicopter
near Duvall, Washington. To commemorate this event, Jack Straw is soliciting compositions for what remains of the instrument – the soundboard and harp, minus the bass strings – which is currently housed in our New Media Gallery.
The selected compositions will be recorded at Jack Straw and incorporated into a Piano Drop installation in the gallery in February, with live performances and more.
Submission guidelines:
- Interested composers should email arts@jackstraw.org or call us at (206) 634-0919 with any questions, or to schedule a time to visit the instrument in the gallery and work on your piece.
- Email submissions to arts@jackstraw.org by midnight the night of Monday, January 7th
- The maximum length for submissions is 4'33".
- Submissions will be accepted as written scores of any kind (PDF or Word) or demo recordings (MP3) – or both. Please also include a short bio.
- The tuning of the strings is as-is. They generally go from low to high, and many of the unisons are still in unison, but this is not a traditional tuning, and we can't guarantee it won't shift as people play it.
- Fingers, mallets, bows, or other gentle forms of activating the strings are fine, but please refrain from striking the strings with great force.
- Duo or ensemble pieces with any additional instruments are welcome!
