2023 Rhode Island Smart Growth Awards

For 25 years, Grow Smart RI and its many partners have helped Rhode Island play more effectively to its strengths. This is done through innovative approaches to revitalizing our Downtowns and Main Streets, promoting housing affordability and placemaking, improving mobility choices and protecting our natural resources and forests. 

The Annual Rhode Island Smart Growth Awards will take place in June, 2023.

The Awards recognize Rhode Island leaders, projects, plans or policies that exemplify smart growth principles and confront the most pressing challenges of our time: climate change, the need for social, racial, and economic justice, and post-Covid restructuring and recovery.

Call for Award Nominations:

Nomination deadline: COB 4/28/23

Nominate a project, plan or leader

Entries will be considered based on how they exemplify one or more of the following smart growth principles:

1. Mix land uses

2. Take advantage of compact design

3. Create a range of housing opportunities and choices

4. Create walkable neighborhoods

5. Foster distinctive, attractive communities with a strong sense of place

6. Preserve open space, farmland, natural beauty, and critical environmental areas

7. Direct development towards existing communities

8. Provide a variety of transportation choices

9. Make development decisions predictable, fair, and cost effective

10. Encourage community and stakeholder collaboration in development decisions

We'll notify nominators of results by early May.
