CALL FOR SPEAKERS FOR THE
PALCUS VIRTUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE
|
|
The PALCUS Virtual National Conference will be held in a series of online sessions running from October 11 through the 22. The purpose of the conference is to create an opportunity for education, business and civic leaders to discuss how we continue to strengthen and grow our Portuguese community nationwide, and to advance the Portuguese-American agenda.
The conference is free to attend and those wishing to participate can register for individual sessions by preference or the entire conference by visiting palcus.org/unitedthroughheritage.
PALCUS is looking for speakers for the following panels/dates:
-
Existing Portuguese Programs in Middle and High Schools - Tuesday, October 12 at 9 AM PT/12 PM ET This session will examine the existing Portuguese language programs in middle and high schools across the country and determine the key elements of a successful program, and how we can duplicate that model to establish new programs in new cities across the country.
-
Getting a Program Started in your Local Schools - Tuesday, October 12 at 3pm PT/6pm ET It might seem impossible, but getting Portuguese established as a language option in your local public school is doable, though it takes a considerable amount of work. Hear from community leaders who have recently gone through this process, learn what worked and how to get started.
-
How Community Centers will be the Foundation of Our Community - Thursday, October 14 at Noon PT/3pm ET For decades, many Portuguese clubs and organizations held festas and other celebrations that were treasured by the community. As times change, participation decreases, and there is a need to reinvent the role of the clubs. Some communities have long established “community centers” that offer a variety of services and activities on a daily basis, and not just during the festas. How can this model serve to strengthen our communities across the country?
-
Perspective of New Communities - Friday, October 15 at Noon PT/3pm ET Over the past few decades, Portuguese Americans have spread across the country to nearly every state in the union. We are seeing burgeoning communities in states such as Arizona, Texas, Colorado and South Carolina. Join us for a discussion with individuals from these communities to hear their perspectives on establishing new connections, “finding” other Portuguese and how they envision the growth of their community.
-
Will Traditional Celebrations Continue? - Monday, October 18 at 9:00 AM PT/12 PM ET For nearly 200 years, the foundation of our community has been traditional events and activities such as the Holy Ghost Festas, dancing folklore, playing in philharmonic bands and singing Fado. But as we have seen a decline in participation in these events over the past decades, what will it take for them to continue?
-
Studying Abroad in Portugal - Wednesday, October 20 at Noon PT/3pm ET There are more study abroad programs than ever before, offering once in a lifetime opportunities to attend universities in Portugal. Join us to discuss the value that these opportunities provide, how to access and apply, and what we can expect to see in the future.
-
Portuguese American Media - How do we reach multiple generations? - Friday, October 22 at 9:00 AM PT/12 PM ET Newspapers, radio, online shows….how can we continue to reach multiple generations with news and information about our community? Join us to discuss what works, what doesn’t, and how we can evolve our Portuguese-American media landscape to achieve greater engagement.
To nominate yourself or someone else, please email palcus@palcus.org with SPEAKER’S information and contact email. Speakers will be selected based on relevance to the topic, and to create a diverse conference, representing various forms of identity, background, career experience and story.

If you agree with the work undertaken by PALCUS to build the social, cultural and political capital of our community, then please join us and become a member today!
Strong membership participation means a stronger voice in the national Portuguese-American agenda. In order to advance Portuguese language education, increase presence in the congressional caucuses, and provide economic opportunities, the collective voice of thousands is needed!
In addition, PALCUS is a member-driven non-profit organization that depends on membership dues and fundraising events to fund its operations. Members of the all-volunteer board of directors donate their time and personal funds for travel, lodging and tickets to attend networking events and planning sessions so our administrative costs are relatively low but nonetheless critical to doing business on a daily basis.
There are membership categories to suit every budget and level of interest. Please click on our membership webpage and join our voice today!

PALCUS Mission
In order to create a singular voice to advocate for the Portuguese-American and Luso-American communities at large, the Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States Inc. (PALCUS) was founded in 1991 as a non-partisan, non-profit, organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.
The PALCUS mission is to address domestic and international concerns of the Portuguese-American Community.
The Council conducts an expanding program of educational and public affairs activities on issues of interest to the Portuguese-American community and of salience to the Luso-American Relationship.
PALCUS is committed to serving the community through increasingly active government relations efforts, the promotion of a greater awareness of ethnic accomplishments and encouraging stronger ties between Portugal and the United States. In this role PALCUS advances the community professionally, politically and culturally while working to ensure that issues directly affecting our community are addressed through our network of government and community leaders.
