We’re all sharing a shudder of horror as we watch our democracy teetering on the brink.

We can’t just watch this happen, we tell ourselves. What can we do? Right here and right now?

What if we could help tip the balance of Congress so Dems would have a roadblock to Trump’s anti-democratic agenda?

Guess what? We actually can!

One of the vacancies in the U.S. Congress is in Florida District 1, right across the bridge in Pensacola. The resignation of disgraced Congressman Matt Gaetz is creating a once-in-a-generation opportunity to flip Florida’s 1st Congressional District in a special election April 1.

Fl-01 has been a Republican stronghold for decades, but shifting voter trends and the low turnouts of special elections have cleared a path to victory For Democrat Gay Valimont. Special elections are low turnout affairs, meaning that a well-executed voter outreach program can dramatically shift results. Only about 15 percent of Republicans turned out for a primary last month won by Trumper Jimmy Patronis. We remember him from his TV ad-nauseums.

Getting a Democratic win in Gaetz’s territory means:

  • Maximizing Democratic turnout to 75 percent
  • Winning 60 percent of Independent voters
  • Aggressive early voting and vote-by-mail campaigns to lock in votes before election day.

That's where Baldwin County Democrats come in.

Baldwin County Dems are organizing canvassing parties to knock doors with the Valimont campaign at 10 a.m. Feb. 22, March 8, and March 22, as part of the Alabama Blue Tour sponsored by United Democratic Volunteers of Alabama. This is the same effort that turned out nearly 50 BCD canvassers for several Sundays in a row to work with the Harris-Vance campaign in Pensacola last fall.

Teams of Alabama Democrats from as far away as Winston County will be making the trek to Pensacola to claim their role in this historic campaign. And all we have to do is drive across the bridge!

Click here to sign up for canvassing. It is optional how long a shift you choose to work. We will organize ride sharing when we see who is coming from where.

If you’d rather fight the Trump regime from the comfort of your own living room, the Valimont campaign also needs help with phone banking. They host trainings every Monday and Tuesday, virtually. Please find available shifts on Mobilize.us/gayforcongress. Experienced phone bankers can go ahead and follow this link: https://www.openvpb.com/vpb_bycode/B72116A-319032

“Phone banking is just as critical as canvassing and available to volunteers who may have issues with mobility. There is a job for everyone,” says Valimont Field Director Erin Begley.

Baldwin County Democrats have a busy year ahead as we recruit and campaign for Democrats in local elections and form government relations teams. But, until April 1, getting Gay Valimont elected to the U.S. Congress is Job 1. We only have six weeks!

Baldwin County Democrats were key to electing Doug Jones to Congress in a special election in 2017. We worked to elect Shomari Figures last year. We can do it again! Let’s step up again to elect Gay Valimont in Fl-01 and trim the Republican control of Congress.

We only lose when we stop fighting!
