Call to Action: Pause for a safety moment

IHSA has learned of a multiple worker workplace injury due to carbon monoxide poisoning at a North York construction site.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless, and highly poisonous gas. It is produced by the incomplete burning of fuels. CO interferes with your body's ability to use oxygen and can kill you.

Please pause all work for a safety moment and re-establish a commitment to the prevention of injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.

Visit the IHSA.ca page and access many FREE resources to consider in controlling the hazards associated with carbon monoxide.

Know the Signs and Symptoms of CO Poisoning

  • Shortage of breath on moderate exertion
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue or drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Nausea
  • Irregular heartbeat

Continuing exposure leads to loss of consciousness and eventual death. At the first indication of symptoms, get into fresh air. With severe exposure, seek immediate medical attention. CO accumulates in your body over time. Even short or light exposures can add up to deadly poisoning.

Refer to the Ontario.ca resource for additional details and summary of legal requirements and precautions.
