AB 1722 UNFORTUNATELY PASSES SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE

SCIL SPONSORED AB 1382 SENT TO SUSPENSE FILE - NEED YOUR HELP ASAP

LAGUNA BEACH HIRING SHELTER MANAGER

With tensions at an all-time high in Northern California between ranchers and wolf conservationists, AB 1722 would create a statutory defense to criminal and civil penalties for killing a wolf or other animals if the killing was in "self-defense." 

Our issue with the bill is not that we believe someone shouldn't be able to protect themselves in a legitimate attack from a wolf - its that there has not been any case where a person was prosecuted or fined for protecting themselves from an animal attack. 

AB 1722 is a bill trying to solve a hypothetical problem.

Additionally, if it were to happen, we trust the Department of Fish and Wildlife to use there prosecutorial discretion in cases that truly required self-defense. 

By codifying a self-defense framework, we believe that AB 1722 is laying a path for ranchers and poachers to claim self-defense and thus be a "get out of jail free card."

AB 1382 Shockingly Sent to Senate Appropriations "Suspense" File!

AB 1382, the Ethics Over Aesthetics Act, authored by Assemblymember Leticia Castillo (R-Corona) and sponsored by Social Compassion in Legislation, was sent to the "suspense" file in the Senate Appropriations Committee.

We are befuddled that the bill was sent to the suspense file. Despite the Senate Rules Committee not sending the bill to Appropriations, the Appropriations Committee pulled the bill into Committee citing potential "court costs." To understand these supposed court costs, we reached out to the Judicial Council, which is the administrative and policymaking body of the California courts. They conveyed to us that they had been tracking the bill and have no concerns regarding any cost to the bill.

This bill is meant to stop the exploitation of animals by biohackers who are trying to make a quick buck by creating "Frankenstein" animals, which after they lose their novel appeal will certainly exacerbate the pet overpopulation crisis. This is in addition to the risk that these genetically modified animals escape into the wild and negatively effect wildlife.

The suspense file will be decided on by August 14th. We hope that Senate leadership, Pro Tem Monique Limon and Chair Sabrina Cervantes will focus on the merits of the bill and allow the bill to move on to the Senate floor.
