Call to Action!

Save California's Law Banning Pigs in Gestation Crates & More!

Many of you know, but as a reminder, California voters passed a historic proposition in 2018, Prop 12. It is a landmark animal welfare law that establishes minimum space requirements for breeding pigs, veal calves, and egg-laying hens. It prohibits the sale of pork, veal, and eggs in California that are produced in confinement systems deemed "cruel" by the state, regardless of whether the animals were raised in California or another state.

Since it's passage, the pork industry has been incessantly lobbying Congress to pass federal legislation which would override Prop 12 and thus allow the sale of any pork products which were produced from pigs which were kept in gestation crates, which confine the animal from moving in any direction.

The bad news: the proposed Farm Bill, which is only voted on every 5 years, has language that the pork industry wants in it!

If this current version of the Farm Bill is passed as is, not only will it kill Prop 12's protection for pigs, but it will also prevent all other state's from passing animal protections for farm animals.

In order to save Prop 12, it is imperative that the Farm Bill is amended to strip out the BAD language. And there is an amendment that does that!

We need to support the Luna-Costa Amendment which will save Prop 12 and allow other states to enact their own cruelty-free legislation!

It will be voted on next week!

SB 1212 Voted Down in Committee!

We are thrilled to share that this week, after intense advocacy by SCIL, a broad coalition of both American and Australian animal protection organizations, and your calls and letters, SB 1212 (Jones) was voted down by the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee. This bill would have exempted kangaroos from California’s ban on the sale of wildlife parts and products, reopening our state to the commercial trade in kangaroo skins and meat.

If you watch the beginning of the hearing, you’ll notice some members are absent—this is common, as legislators are often pulled to other committees due to overlapping responsibilities. During the initial discussion, the bill did not receive a motion for a vote. At the end of the hearing, those members returned to cast votes on the bills they missed. At that point, Senator Seyarto made the motion to allow a vote. The Committee then voted: 1 yes, 2 no, and 4 abstentions.

A sincere thank you to the Chair, Senator Josh Becker (D-Menlo Park), for his “no” vote and for his leadership in urging fellow Committee members to reject the bill.

We also extend our gratitude to Australian MP Emma Hurst for providing a powerful quote for the hearing and helping mobilize opposition from over 50 organizations and thousands of individuals. Click on the photo below to watch her viral Instagram video on SB 1212.
