This month's special guest:
Sue DiCicco Smith
Founder, Peace Crane Project
Attend in person and stay for peace crane folding after the program!
Sue DiCicco Smith is an artist, author, and former Walt Disney Feature Animation artist. She founded the Peace Crane Project in 2012 to connect young people around the world through the shared art of origami. The Peace Crane Project began after the Sandy Hook school shootings. Sue wanted to address this tragedy in a meaningful way and decided to "arm" children with the arts, not guns. The project has since reached more than 2,000 participants in over 150 countries.
The inspiring book, The Complete Story of Sadako Sasaki and the Thousand Paper Cranes, was written by Sue with co-author Masahiro Sasaki, the brother of Sadako. On August 1, we'll hear more about Sadako's moving story and the Peace Crane Project's new One Crane-One Letter-One World initiative, inviting people of all ages to fold and share cranes.
If you can attend in person...
Following the online portion of the program, everyone at The Peace School is invited to stay and fold peace cranes. We'll have the supplies and someone to help guide you in a fun activity for you and your family.
You'll also get to hear about a local initiative called Cranes for Peace, led by Japanese Cultural Center and the Osaka Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, which has the goal of collectively folding 10,000 origami cranes to be displayed at a Chicago cultural institution in 2027! So you can fold cranes for yourself and for each of these initiatives while you're here.
