Greetings from the Office of Priestly Vocations!

Our seminarians are now at their respective seminaries for the start of the 25-26 year. As we send them off we reflect on the many blessings being showered upon us.

We have six new men discerning the priesthood this year. Two were featured in last month’s newsletter and and we are highlighting two more in this issue. Their backgrounds vary but they all come with open hearts, discerning the will of God in their lives.

In addition to the six new seminarians, we also have thirteen returning seminarians. God willing, in May 2026, one of these 13 will be ordained to the priesthood and one will be ordained to the transitional diaconate.

We have a new Assistant Vocations Director. Fr. Ethan Osborn was ordained to the priesthood at the end of May and started part-time with the Vocations Office on July 1. He works with me to help men in their discernment process and serves as parochial vicar at St. Peter’s Parish in Kansas City.

I will continue to serve as Director of Vocations for the diocese while also taking on the role as Pastor at St. Peter’s Parish and School in Kansas City.

In addition to the blessings above, and the many we don’t have space to list, we are blessed by each of you who are partnering with the Vocations Office to build up the culture of vocations throughout our diocese. Your importance cannot be understated. Our Vocations Office team cannot personally get to every parish but, with your help, we are able to reach more and more parishes each month through you. Please review the upcoming events below for ways you can continue to partner with us. Also, please be sure to keep an eye on the kcpriest.org website.  It will be updated as registration opens for each event.

God bless you all!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Father Rueb

Vocation Ministry Teams Workshop

By Allison Vrooman | Photos by

Vocation Ministry Team (VMT) members from parishes across the diocese gathered for the second Vocation Ministry Summit on August 2. The day consisted of prayer, talks and breakout sessions. Father Nathan Rueb explained the current state of discernment in the diocese and shared that the Vocations Office received approximately 200 names from the Called by Name Sunday initiative. Acknowledging the impressive outcome, he emphasized that there is still work to be done. Vocation Ministry Team members also presented information on projects they offered at their respective parishes.

The Vocations Office has received a free subscription to videos produced for the workshop which are available to VMT members who weren't able to attend. Team members may contact the Office of Priestly Vocations at kroper@diocesekcsj.org for access to the link.

VMT Spotlight | St. Therese Parish [North], Kansas City

At St. Therese Parish [North] in Kansas City, a Ministry Team has developed a special tradition. To honor the men who are ordained to the priesthood from their parish, an engraved chalice is prayed over by families from the parish then it is gifted to the next priest when they are ordained. Christie Schmidt, parishioner at St. Therese Parish, explained that the first chalice was donated by the Knights of Columbus and the Ministry Team had it engraved.

The group created a weekly Signup Genius for families to use to volunteer to keep the chalice in their home and pray for those discerning as well as an increase in vocations to the religious life. The link is promoted on small cards placed in the Adoration Chapel, the church bulletin and e-newsletter, and during religious education classes.

The chalice is stored in the Usher's Room in a designated cabinet, with its own chalice box that includes laminated prayers for vocations, a picture of the seminarians and consecrated religious from St. Therese, and current priests/deacons serving the parish. The chalice is returned by Saturday 4:30 p.m. Mass each week for the next pick up.

The parish's first chalice was prayed over for two years and gifted to Fr. Antony Augustine Cherian during his Mass of Celebration.

Seminarians enjoying some downtime during the 2024 Lake Days.

Lake Days Reflection

By Ashlie Hand

For decades, the Serra Clubs in the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph have hosted Lake Days, a weekend for seminarians in our diocese to build brotherhood as they journey together in discerning a call to the priesthood. Held over three days each summer before seminarians depart for their fall semester, the agenda includes daily prayer, Eucharistic Adoration, and Mass in addition to swimming, boating, skiing and tubing with the main goal of building fraternity.

Xavier Schmidt, a seminarian in the configuration stage of his preparation at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis, has attended Lake Days for several years, saying, “I'm awed by the beauty of the fraternal relationships I have with my brother seminarians. Because we attend various seminaries and have different assignments throughout the summer, it can be difficult and near-impossible just to be with each other. Lake Days gives us the chance to catch up and hang out. I often forget how much my heart needs that kind of friendship. We're all pursuing a special configuration to Jesus as His priests, and that's a unique thing! Lake Days gives us the opportunity to relate to each in solidarity because we're experiencing the same trials and joys.”

More than just a weekend away, Lake Days also plays a role in supporting the seminarians’ discernment. Schmidt shared how the weekend impacts his journey, saying, “It's easy to get bogged down in the heaviness of formation while at the seminary, but it's on vacations like this that give me a boost and help me to remember that relationships with my brothers will sustain me as a priest. I'm blessed to have the brother seminarians I have, and their support for me, as a man and beloved son of the Father, helps me to see clearly the will of God in my life.”

A highlight of the weekend for Schmidt is time spent visiting with Bishop Johnston.

“A special privilege of Lake Days is the presence of our bishop, who attentively listens to all of us as we share about our past year. He shares his fatherly wisdom with us and often leaves us with some goal or focus for the upcoming year,” he said.
