Transformational God, we give thanks for the renewal you brought through Martin Luther, your partner in reform. Now, as you transform breathtaking beauty and bountiful harvests to subdued rest and subtle rejuvenation, we are thankful for the renewal you bring to creation. We, too, are new creations in Christ! Continue to transform us to become lifelong learners, gracious givers, selfless servants, ardent advocates and your prayerful partners. Through us, bring reform to your kin-dom. Amen.

PARTNER MINISTRY HIGHLIGHT: SWANSONS & INSTITUTE FOR CHILD HEALTHCARE AFRICA

Dr. Steve and Jodi Swanson have been residing and working in Arusha, Tanzania, since 2013 when they moved from Minneapolis to Arusha with their three children–Hannah, Caedmon and Indya. They are working with two Lutheran Hospitals in Arusha.

Dr. Swanson established the most advanced neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Tanzania and is the pediatric inpatient director at Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre (ALMC). He has mentored and trained numerous Tanzanian physicians and nurses. In 2021, his team in Tanzania launched Africa’s largest conference in neonatology, Tiny Feet, Big Steps—Advancing Care of Critically Ill and Premature Babies in Africa. This international training conference is held annually in Arusha, and over the past four years has trained over 600 African doctors and nurses from 20 African countries in the fundamentals of neonatology and how to advance their hospitals’ ability to care for premature infants. The 5th annual conference will be held this November 3-8 in Arusha.

Jodi, a pediatric nurse, works at Selian Lutheran Hospital and has been instrumental in the implementation of a standardized feeding program for hospitalized children with severe acute malnutrition. She works in hospital settings, feeding clinics and villages to treat and prevent malnutrition in small children.

Two years ago, they began to dream of expanding and strengthening their work through their newly founded non-governmental organization, Institute for Child Healthcare Africa (ICHA). They desire to see pediatrics and neonatology strengthened throughout Tanzania and the African continent. Through ICHA, they hope to strengthen and sustain the NICU, expand the impact of the conference and establish a pediatric and maternity outpatient center. Their heart is to train and empower the Tanzanians to carry this work forward into the future.

BUILDING TOGETHER: A NEW SEASON AT ALL NATIONS INDIAN CHURCH

All Nations Indian Church was Immanuel’s 2024 Justice Fund Recipient. It is also a Worship With Our Partner Ministries sites (see above and HERE). Associate Pastor Dr. Kelly Sherman-Conroy says, “We believe God is calling us into a new way of thinking about mission. For too long, ‘mission’ has meant one church giving while another receives. At All Nations, we are inviting our partners into something much deeper, a relationship of mutual care where we give and receive together. It means seeing one another as kin, not projects. It means asking: How do we show up for each other? How do we share not just our resources, but our hearts, our time, our prayers?” (Guest Blogs, September 8, 2025). Read Dr. Sherman-Conroy’s description of All Nations’ strategic ministry HERE.

A MESSAGE FROM FORMER PRESIDING BISHOP EATON ON POLITICAL VIOLENCE

Former Presiding Bishop Rev. Elizabeth Eaton of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) calls on us to reflect deeply on the role of civic engagement and the moral imperative to reject violence in our political discourse. In her statement on September 11, she said, “This church teaches that disagreement is healthy and can lead to greater understanding and cooperation. But we have lost that sense of respectful debate and have degenerated into a society that treats differing opinions as personal attacks, erasing the humanity of some and abandoning the gospel of Jesus Christ. We must recommit ourselves to reflecting what Christ taught us through acts of forgiveness, healing and new life. I continue to hold that 'God’s resolve for peace in human communities is unshakable.'” Read Former Bishop Eaton’s full statement HERE.

ELCA STATEMENT ON IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT

On September 11, 2025, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's (ELCA's) Former Presiding Bishop Rev. Elizabeth Eaton issued the “ELCA Statement on Supreme Court Ruling That Allows Racial Profiling in Immigration Enforcement.” She began, “I am deeply troubled by incidents of racial profiling that are happening across this country in the name of law enforcement and national security.” She expressed solidarity with the Latiné community. Bishop Eaton continued, “To meet this moment, God calls us to advocacy. Guided by God’s law in the Scriptures, which demand justice and seek the well-being of all, the ELCA calls upon policymakers and community leaders to:

  • Honor or restore constitutional safeguards against racial and ethnic profiling.
  • Reverse policies and practices that normalize discrimination or exclusion.
  • Reaffirm a shared commitment to justice that upholds the worth of every neighbor.
  • Work for an immigration system that protects the dignity of all.”

EMMAUS WALKS

“And [Jesus] said to them, 'What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?'” (Luke 24:17a NRSVue

In Luke Chapter 24, Jesus joins a pair of his followers along the road to Emmaus and listens as they share with him their uncertainty and excitement around news of his resurrection (not realizing it was Jesus himself walking beside them). As they travel together, Jesus offers guidance and instruction. At the end of the day, he breaks bread with them. Then, the followers at last recognize Jesus beside them, and their hearts are ignited once more.

Deacon Savannah will be extending Immanuel's Emmaus Walks through the fall (weather permitting). She says participants "will walk together and share our own wonderings, uncertainties and anticipations about the world around us as we seek assurance and hope in Jesus’ resurrection." Meet Thursday at noon in Immanuel’s courtyard for an hour-long walk around Round Lake. Deacon Savannah invites folks to "bring your prayers, ponderings and walking shoes, as we meet one another on the road." See more information HERE.

PRAY FOR SCHOOLS IN THE HOLY LAND

Bishop-Elect Rev. Imad Mousa Dawood Haddad, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, said, “As Lutherans, our churches are part of the same vine. You, too, are a church called to abide in Jesus and bear fruit.” Bishop-Elect Haddad continued, “When you speak clearly about justice for Palestinians, together with other Christian, Jewish and Muslim voices in the Holy Land and around the world, that is bearing fruit” (access Bishop Haddad’s remarks HERE). The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s (ELCA’s) Sumud is committed to relational accompaniment, witness and support of a Christian presence in the Holy Land. As part of that accompaniment, please pray for the five schools that are part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land's ministry. Pray for each of these schools by name:

  • Dar Al Kalima Lutheran School
  • The Evangelical Lutheran School of Beit Sahour
  • Talitha Kumi School
  • Al Mohoba Nursery and Preschool on the Mount of Olives
  • The School of Hope in Mamallah

PRAY FOR PEACE

“O God, it is your will to hold both heaven and earth in a single peace. Let the design of your great love shine on the waste of our wraths and sorrows, and give peace to your church, peace among nations, peace in our homes, and peace in our hearts; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen” (Evangelical Lutheran Worship [ELW, hymnal], 2006, p. 76).
