Pastor's Periodic Pondering
by Pastor Richard Braun

Have you ever had a song get caught in your head and it seems to keep playing over and over again?  This has been the case for me these past few weeks.  You might guess that the song stuck in my head was "Under the Sea," because that was a great number from the church's production of The Little Mermaid, but it wasn't.  No, it just so happened to be a song by Chris Tomlin called "At the Cross".  For some reason the lyrics seem to really standout to me in a very profound way.  Perhaps, it's because Pastor Josh and I have been talking about Lent and I have been pondering what that might look like for me this year.

Then a little over a week ago I read that we are supposed to bring a cross to the Ash Wednesday Lenten service.  Is something conspiring to bring the cross into the forefront of my life? I wonder! I don't know, maybe God is preparing me to enter this season of Lent in a new way.

Look at the lyrics and see if you might not be affected by this song in a similar way (better yet pull it up on YouTube and listen to it):

There's a place where mercy reigns and never dies
There's a place where streams of grace flow deep and wide
Where all the love I've ever found
Comes like a flood
Comes flowing down
At the cross
At the cross
I surrender my life
I'm in awe of You, I'm in awe of You
Where Your love ran red
And my sin washed white
I owe all to You, I owe all to You
Jesus

Do you have a cross at home that you can look to this Lenten season? This is the cross I think I'll be using. It is very special to me since it was given to me by a parishioner when I left the last parish I served as Interim Pastor. You see, the parish was special since I had grown up in that very parish and came back to serve there when a pastor left for another call.

You could say, my faith was developed at the cross while growing up in that very church. The note on the cross starts out with "Once a seed in the soil, once a tree in the sun...... and ends with, now a cross where grace is found." When we begin to understand what Jesus has done for us from the very beginning of our lives we come to the cross and often surrender our lives out of a sense of awe and gratitude. When we begin to grasp what washed red, as our sin became white, how can we not surrender our very lives at the cross. Will you hear God's call once again during this season of Lent?

Is this a conspiracy or just one of those God things we often talk about? Whatever the case, how will you respond to God's call during this season of Lent?

See you at church..... Pastor Richard
