Hello  Family!

A lot has happened since our August Newsletter mail out and the upcoming months promise to be just as busy!

This is our first attempt at a completely electronic newsletter.  From now on we hope to use this as the primary means of getting the word out about Alumni related issues.  It certainly is more cost effective and it is easier than licking 2000 envelopes shut.

Please take a moment to read this newsletter as it is filled with valuable information.  I welcome any feedback you wish to offer concerning the appearance and format of this newsletter.  It is a work in progress and we can a
lways make improvements.  If you have any information you would like included in the next newsletter feel free to send it in.

On behalf of the school, I want to wish you and your families a very merry, restful and holy Christmas and may the New Year bring you the best life has to offer.

Hope to see you at an upcoming alumni event!

Alumni Advisory Board Meets
Moving toward the next 50 years!

The Alumni have always played an important role in the life of the school.  I found evidence of this in the school's archives.  I came STM in 1964across the first version of the constitution of the Alumni Association formed in 1966. It was typed, copied on a Gestetner and came  with a $1.00 a year membership fee. Cool!  Now in 2010 we are about to embark on important step in the re-structuring of the Alumni Association by forming an Alumni Advisory Board.  This Board, which is still in its formative stages, will provide insights and opinions concerning the current structure and future growth of the Alumni Association.  Members will also be asked to help run future events and help shape the alumni's involvement in the building and funding of the new gym and field.  The members in attendance of the first meetings were enthusiastic and already provided valuable insights.  In these early stages we are still looking for new members of this Board (ESPECIALLY THE MORE EXPERIENCED ALUMNI FROM THE 1980'S AND OLDER).  If you are interested in being involved with this group please contact me!

The Future of Athletics & Community at STMC
New Athletic Centre
STMC has a dream to build a new 27,000-square-foot athletic & community centre with a fitness centre and NBA-sized double gym, a lighted turf field and field house

By now you may have heard that STMC is hoping to start its most ambitious construction project ever:  a new Athletics & Community Centre that features an expanded double-gym, full fitness centre and lighted turf field with field house!  It is high time the STMC campus had athletic facilities that provide a proper home for our long legacy of athletic excellence.

Fundraising is just beginning, but the early responses have been very promising.  The total cost of the new facilities is $8.2 million, and STMC has already secured $3.8 million in early pledges and commitments.  Those commitments include a $1.5 million matching gift challenge from the StanJean Foundation, as well as a number of

extraordinary five-year gifts of $10,000 to $200,000 from ngel funders who stepped forward early.

STMC hopes to find about 50 such Angels to enable the school to start construction on the new Athletic & Community Centre in Spring 2011

Ultimately, STMC aims to raise $1.5 million from the Alumni community (about 20% of the goal), and will secure the rest of the funding needed from current parents, foundations, corporate supporters and major gifts.  Eventually, all alumni will be invited to participate in some way.  Stay tuned for more details.

It is indeed an exciting time to be a Knight!

Knights Get Married
KnightFlowers
Jamie Garbutt ('01) married Diana Martins recently and numerous Knights were involved in their special day.  The wedding party included  Edwin (James' brother and grad of 2000) and a host of characters from the 2001 grad class were groomsmen:  Jake Power, Jorden Foss, Eric Cheng, Derek Papas, Scot Marshall and the MC was Francis Paqueo.  Jamie and Diana    honeymooned in Fiji and New Zealand. (Editor's Note:  Apparently no Grads of 2001 accompanied them on their honeymoon!)

Another November wedding had a strong STMC flavor.  Maggie Lindsay ('02) got married to Mike Bonvino. Her co-maids of honor were her sisters Suzanne ('06) and Katie ('04).  Her brother Scott Lindsay ('00) was a groomsman  and her father Greg Lindsay ('67) walked her down the aisle. Alex Johnson, Celine Scott and Lauren Nottingham (all from the grad class of 2002) were her bridesmaids.

Finally two members of the class of 2001 Tanya Ripoli and Mike McKinlay made their high school romance official by getting married.  Erin Nestmann (nee Hall, Grad of '01) and Monica Wise (nee Miesl, Grad of '01) were in the wedding party.

If anyone has a wedding announcement they want mentioned, feel free to contact me.

 Knight wins award!

Leo Brunleoeau ('91) recently was presented the Jim Hart Award for Outstanding Community Service by the Children's Miracle Network at a ceremony held in Orlando, Florida.  Leo has run numerous fund raising events over the years for many charities most notably BC Children's Hospital.  Leo, who was the school Chancellor in his grad year, is a realtor in the Tri-Cities area.  Leo showed brilliance even in high school.  He, I am sure, will be the only STMC student to ski down the steps at the school.  It was Wacky Footwear Day!  Oh the memories!

A Quick Re-Cap of STMC Sports

The fall represents a busy time athletically at the school.  We turned in solid performances in swimming, cross country and the volleyball program had another successful season capped off by the Senior Girls finishing 9th in the Provincials in Kamloops.

The football teams at all 3 levels went deep in the playoffs furthering STMCs  reputation as a gridiron force.  On the Varsity level there were some notable achievements by individuals. James MacKenzie was named the 2010 Subway Academic Player of the Year and Ross Hilliam won the 2010 Overtime Athletics Scholarship. Four players were namedEastern Conference All Stars:  Mikey Carney - Defensive Back, Ross Hilliam - Wide Receiver, Carlson Lacson - Offensive Line. Kyle Madden - Linebacker.   Additionally, Kyle, who is only in grade 11, was selected as the  Eastern Conference Defensive MVP.  Both Kyle Madden (Line- Backer) and Ross Hilliam (Receiver) were furt

her selected as Pepsi Provincial All- Stars.  Mikey Carney was  selected as the province's Grade 11 Player of the Year.  This marks the first time that a player from STM was selected for this award.

We now have all 6 basketball teams (3 girls teams and 3 boys) practicing hard.  The senior girls won their Chancelloralready.  They are led by Lexie Der who recently signed her letter of intent to attend Boise State on a full ride basketball scholarship.  The Varsity boys who willbe competing in the AA division this year, just returned from a tourney in Kamloops where they defeated Clarence Fulton who are ranked 4th in the province.

Other Exciting School News

Toys4Kids Drive

STMC student Miguel Ramos with Dawn Chubai of CityTV and Steve Podborski of Telus presenting a $500 cheque

Excellence abounds at the school in numerous areas.  The Fine Arts Program recently had their Christmas Concert.  Over 200 students are now involved in the various Fine Arts Programs offered by the school.

The students continue to do great things in the area of community service as well.   We are off to another record year in Missions collections and we have been on the City-TV recently for the Toy Drive organized by Miguel Ramos, a grade 10 student in Mr. Ruzycki's Planning 10 class.   The Drive has raised over $2000.00 and resulted in the collection of 800 or more toys.

You can go here to see a great video of CityTV's coverage of the Toys4Kids Drive at STMC.

The students are so generous with their time and money.   They routinely run clothing drives, work in the local soup kitchens and volunteer with the AGAPE ministry which aids women living in Vancouver's downtown eastside.  The students, led by our Campus Minister Dave Mattiazzo, are awesome and put their faith into practice.

A Video on Ferdie Carrion Class of 2009

Ferdie

Mr. Mitchell's Leadership class has entered a video contest sponsored by the BCAA.  They were challenged to come up with a video on the issue of drinking and driving. Since many of our current students were touched by the tragic death earlier this year of Ferdie Carrion ('09), they chose to center their video on his story.  The video obviously struck a chord with its viewers and based on voting has been identified as one of the top 3 videos submitted.  The students will win cash to be used for their dry grad, but they really hope that seeing the video will convince someone to not drink and drive and thereby hopefully some good can come out of Ferdie's tragic passing.
